Job Description

The primary objective of the program manager is to provide planning services for Continuing and Professional Education's (CPE) vast portfolio of conferences, short courses, training programs, institutes, workshops and other unique offerings. The program manager is responsible for developing new client relationships with a strong focus on conference and event business. The program manager is responsible for generating program revenue to meet annual revenue targets for the unit. The program manager will supervise one or more program planning professionals who specialize in logistics and program implementation. CPE strives to create value driven experiences that provide positive impressions for the University, our clients, and the participants attending the programs we facilitate. The successful candidate should have a good sense of humor, strong customer service ethos, and the ability to create a dynamic work environment that produces positive energy, creativity, teamwork, diversity, and mutual respect. The program manager works with faculty, staff, state agencies, and corporate personnel to identify needs for each program, develop a comprehensive budget plan, negotiate and secure contracts with venues and other necessary services, and establish a detailed scope of services.
Occasional travel may be required to provide local and out-of-town program support. Occasional overnight, weekend, early morning, and late evening work may be required. This position is a restricted appointment and continuation of appointment may be contingent on availability of funding and business needs.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in business or a related field or equivalent training and/or experience in business or hospitality management.
Supervisory experience.
Exceptional organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
Demonstrated experience in educational, conference, and/or large scale event planning/program development, implementation, and administration.
Experience in program budget development and management.
Ability to establish and maintain good rapport with internal and external clients.
Excellent promotion and sales skills.
Demonstrated leadership and teambuilding skills.
Strong computing skills and proficiency in basic office applications (Microsoft Office suite including Word, Excel, and Outlook) and an understanding of the use of social media for promotional purposes.
Must be able to handle numerous projects and details simultaneously and accurately while prioritizing according to need and schedule.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in a related field Advanced experience in project planning and budgeting in a continuing education setting
Experience with Commonwealth of Virginia and/or university policies and procedures Preference may be given to individuals who have a designation of Certified Program Planner (CPP) or Certified Meeting Planner (CMP)
