Job Description

ExperienceVT provides our students with ways for them to engage in purposeful conversations, opportunities, and experiences to get involved at Virginia Tech in a meaningful way. ExperienceVT supports and oversees the following departments: Cranwell International Center, Fraternity and Sorority Life, VT Engage, Living-Learning Programs, the Office of Learning Partnerships, Student Governance, and Student Engagement and Campus Life.

Student Engagement and Campus Life uplifts the student experience by cultivating affirming environments, promoting holistic well-being, and providing exceptional services.
Emboldened and inspired by Virginia Tech's Aspirations for Student Learning, the Student Engagement and Campus Life team to build a student-centered and learning-focused approach to co-curricular and experiential learning including providing outstanding programs and services to our student and campus community.

The Associate Director leads a team who build meaningful events, programs and experiences for all students. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Development and implementation of purposeful and learning centered programs and services.
  • Partner with Director and Associate Directors to further the development, enhancement, and assessment of three student centers, the University chapel, campus events, student organizations, and student employee training and education.
  • Actively participate in strategic planning and budget development
  • Lead policy and process review
  • Lead the development and execution of assessment efforts.
  • Provide oversight for student organizations and their continued growth and engagement.
  • Supervise three full-time staff (Art Program Director; Assistant Director, Student Center Recreation and Principal Engagement Engineer; and Assistant Director, Student Programs and Principal Engagement Engineer as well as indirectly supervisor professional, paraprofessional, and student staff members).

Required Qualifications

The selected individual must demonstrate a deep commitment to student success with a passion for designing student experiences and an unrelenting commitment to student success, learning, and inclusion. As an integral part of the ExperienceVT initiative, the Associate Director and Lead Engagement Engineer position requires consistent energy, creativity, collaboration, and ingenuity. They will lead the institution in spearheading programs, events, and experiences that create learning laboratories across campus and join co-curricular and curricular learning in new ways. The successful candidate will be team-oriented and demonstrate adaptability, and initiative. They should demonstrate vision and creativity in program design and promotion, as well as strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Further, the successful candidate will demonstrate a growth mindset and embrace change as an opportunity for creativity, learning, and improvement. Experience working with diverse populations of students in complex, institutional setting is required, along with a demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion. The enthusiastic support of Student Affairs' Aspirations for Student Learning; ExperienceVT; the mission of Virginia Tech, including Inclusive VT, Beyond Boundaries, and our land grant spirit are required. A master's degree and progressively responsible professional experience related to the areas of higher education/student affairs, student centers/unions, programming, event management, student advising, and/or student involvement is required.

Preferred Qualifications

Extensive experience in planning and implementation of programs, supervision of professionals, advising student organizations, and review and negotiation of entertainment contracts.
