The Boise State University Department of Music invites applications for the tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Music (Director of Bands/Instrumental Music Education). Boise State University is the largest university in Idaho located in a thriving metropolitan area. In addition to serving as a cultural hub for the arts, Boise offers a vibrant downtown, picturesque vistas, and great outdoor recreation. The Department of Music has about 170 undergraduate and graduate students, 21 full-time faculty and 17 adjunct faculty. We offer BM degrees in Composition, Music Education, Performance; BA degree in Music; and MM degrees in Choral Conducting, Music Education, and Performance. Workload is 60% teaching; 20% creative activity and 20% service.

Job responsibilities:  

  • Direct the institution’s premier wind band, Symphonic WindsWork with wind/brass/percussion faculty to actively recruit for the Department of Music

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate course(s) in Instrumental Music Education, such as Instrumental Methods, Conducting & Practicum, and Advanced Conducting.

  • Cultivate working relationships with area and regional educators to promote the university bands, Department of Music and music education 

  • Run the existing High School Band Festival and Honor Band

  • Maintain a collaborative relationship with all Music faculty 

  • Participate in Department of Music activities and committee work, as load permits

At a minimum, candidate will have:  

  • Doctorate in Music, ABD will be considered 

  • At least one degree must be earned in Music Education

  • At least one degree must be earned in Conducting

  • Expertise to teach and develop courses in Instrumental Music Education (ie. Instrumental Methods, conducting courses, etc.)

  • Evidence of creative activity and achievement in wind band conducting

Preferentially, candidate will have: 

  • Doctorate in Conducting or Music Education

  • Successful experience teaching wind bands grades 9-12        

  • Successful experience teaching wind bands at the collegiate level 

  • Successful experience recruiting at the collegiate level

  • Professional experience conducting community bands and/or local, state and regional honor bands

  • Evidence of achievement in teaching Wind Bands, Conducting & Music Education (ie. syllabi, course development, projects, etc.)

  • Video recordings which showcase your skills as a conductor and rehearsal technician. Please include both performance and rehearsal settings with repertoire of varying styles, not to exceed 30 minutes. Singular movements or significant excerpts will be accepted. Live recordings must be from within the last 5 years.
