POSITION SUMMARY

Coordination and case management of NWTC Student Veterans and dependents by providing direct student contact, assess student needs and develop individualized plans. Assist current and prospective veterans and family members with identifying and applying for federal and state Veteran educational benefits. Responsible for certification of enrollment information for eligible Veteran students and dependents to state and federal Department of Veterans Affairs. Build collaborative partnerships to seamlessly transition student veterans and dependents to the appropriate services that will aid in enrollment, retention, completion, and employment after graduation. Engage student veterans in developing sense of belonging and inclusion.

Essential Functions Statement(s)

  • Use relationship building approaches to provide case management, advocacy, referral coordination, crisis intervention, comprehensive support services and follow-up to student veterans and dependents. Assess student’s stage of development (academic, career, and personal) and promote student growth by determining suitable developmental tasks. Assist student in establishing realistic and attainable academic, personal and career goals. Respond to Veteran Advising referrals.
  • Advise student Veteran/dependents regarding state and federal veteran education benefits in accordance with federal and state regulations. Assess each student’s benefit eligibility, help students request information to use available benefits most appropriately. Guide student veterans and dependents through the application process for state and federal veteran education benefits as well as support for transferring education benefits post-graduation.
  • Provide support for students and prospective students with questions about the admissions process, overall VA education benefits application and certification process, payment and benefit problems, rate of pursuit calculations, and transfer of Military Credit for Prior Learning process.
  • Track, monitor, and assess individual student cases when called to active duty for training, deployments, or emergency response. Collaborate with the student, instructor(s), Dean, and Academic Advisor to determine a success plan to complete classes when the student must miss any class time for training or active-duty orders.
  • Act as liaison to develop and maintain collaborative relationships between internal campus faculty, staff, and programs as well as veteran organizations within the community to provide comprehensive, wrap-around services for student veterans and their families.
  • Responsible for certification and changes in enrollment data for eligible student veterans and their dependents to the State and Federal Department of Veterans Affairs while ensuring the college maintains compliance with all related federal, state, and college policies
  • Maintain accurate records and reports in accordance with state and federal guidelines. Maintain Veteran Educational Benefit Program Policy and Procedure manual. Assist with the preparation of required reports for federal and state Veterans Affairs. Communicate with various federal, state, and local agencies regarding various student matters.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records and reports in accordance with state and federal guidelines to assist with VA Compliance visits, Catalog Reviews, and VA payment reconciliation.
  • Develop and facilitate workshops, events, and participate in appropriate programs and outreach activities which foster student success and provide awareness of NWTC’s Veteran Services throughout the NWTC district. Build strong, collaborative partnerships with outlying NWTC locations, community partners, educational institutions, etc.
  • Develop and implement recruitment and retention strategies to increase student success consistent with NWTC Strategic Directions and College Initiatives

Computer Skills

Microsoft Office Suite

Experience with student records information management system (e.g. PeopleSoft Campus Solutions) and Department of Veterans Affairs database (VAOnce) preferred.
