Job Description

The Department of Music in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham invites applications for an assistant professor. This is a non-tenure earning, nine-month appointment that will begin in Fall 2023. Primary responsibility will be to teach applied voice to undergraduate music and musical theatre majors and graduate music education students, serve as stage director for full opera productions, and teach Opera Workshop and other courses as needed. Candidates with significant professional experience in musical theatre performance are especially encouraged to apply.

The Department of Music, with 18 regular and 25 part-time faculty, offers the BA degree with concentrations in applied music, music technology, and music education and the MA degree in Music Education. There are currently some 125 music majors and minors with a demonstrated history of strong growth and anticipation for continued expansion. The Department is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. Classes are taught and performances given in modern facilities including the Alys Robinson Stephens Center for the Performing Arts which features a critically acclaimed 1,342 seat Jemison concert hall, the Sirote proscenium theater, the Odess experimental theater and the Reynolds-Kirschbaum Recital Hall. The Stephens Center is the site for many of the Music Department's concerts and recitals and is the home of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. The Hulsey Center is the home of the Department of Music and houses all faculty offices and studios, practice rooms, classrooms, and the 235-seat Hulsey Recital Hall.

Required Qualifications

A Master's degree in music is required along with evidence of effective voice studio teaching in both classical and musical theatre genres. The faculty in the Department of Music are a mutually supportive community. Evidence of professional and collegial collaboration with colleagues is an important qualification for this position.

Preferred Qualifications

Doctorate in Music or significant professional experience in musical theatre performance.
