The Roads and Grounds unit of the Division of Facilities and Services at West Virginia University is accepting applications for a Campus Service Worker Lead/Laborer.
About the Opportunity
This position provides both direct and indirect support of the University's recycling program, and the incumbent performs routine and special collection of recyclables, documenting quantity and quality of material, and cleaning and maintenance of both indoor and outdoor recycling sites. Also assists in relocating offices, classrooms, etc. and assists in special event set ups, which may require overtime. As the recycling program develops, job duties may become more varied and complex.

What You'll Do
- Functionas a team leader in the collection of recyclables daily from either inside or outside of campus buildings and transports them to the recycling center or paper mill for the purpose of recycling. Makes decisions for the team with respect to collection locations, collection schedule, inside vs. outside collections, and interacts with building users and occupants to increase amount of recyclables, e.g. speaks to vendors located within buildings asking them to break down cardboard and instructs them where it should be placed for collection. At own discretion, adjusts collection schedule to accommodate traffic patterns, daily demands of the program, and what can realistically be achieved on a daily basis.
- Makedecisions about when recyclables will be taken to final destination, based on volume and program efficiency. Determinewhat is priority and what can wait.
- Operatea motor vehicle (i.e. box truck, pick up truck or recycling truck) to transport material and unloads various recyclables at final destination. Records the amounts collected from each building and reports them to the Recycling Coordinator on a weekly basis. Checkbags for content and contamination and makes note of which buildings exhibit problems with material and notifies Recycling Coordinator. When necessary, enters building to collect material and/or address issues at recycling stations, pick up voluminous materials or to answer questions regarding the recycling program
- Conductspecial pick-ups, outside the routine scheduled collections, as needed or at the direction of supervisor or the Recycling Coordinator. Determineschedule for special collections, based on knowledge of daily work demands.
- Relocaterecycling bins and/or stations within buildings and throughout campus by lifting, loading, unloading and transporting them to various locations; in many cases, for the purpose of setting up new recycling stations. Makerecommendations or suggestions on what operational changes could be made to improve or streamline the program collections. In cases of heavy request volume, uses judgment to determine priorities and maximize efficiency of the recycling team. Collectand properly disposes of trash and litter throughout institutional buildings and grounds, including cleaning of trash receptacles and assisting sanitation vehicle operators. Attends meetings as requested.
- Cleanup spills ru1d debris in and around outdoor recycling sites, always ensuring that sites portray a clean and positive image of the recycling program. ln cases where non-recyclable material is deposited at recycling stations, must remove and properly dispose of unwanted material. Must be able to provide support to academics, special events (home football games, Fallfest, Honors Weekend, Blue and Goldmine Sale, etc.) for WVU campus community, regional campuses, and throughout the state, requiring flexible work hours and mandatory overtime.
- As recycling program demands permit, may be required to remove snow from sidewalks, steps, roads and parking lots, using hand tools, power brooms and snow blowers. Spread de-icers and limestone chips on all areas as needed.
- Operate, maintain and service equipment and tools that are used while performing moves, collection of recyclables, set ups, sanitation services and snow removal. Operate, service and maintain hand power tools and equipment such as weed-eaters, lawn mowers, roto-tillers, walk-behind sweepers and vacs. May be required to help with the maintenance and care of institutional grounds by mowing, trimming and edging around trees, flower beds, buildings and walkways; watering lawns, shrubs and ornamental gardens during dry periods. Assist with landscape construction by operating jackhammers and other related equipment to remove broken sidewalks; mixing, pouring and spreading concrete, asphalt, gravel and other materials; using tools, excavate and prepare grounds prior to initiation of construction projects.
- The successful applicant must be willing to adapt schedule to accommodate the needs of a new and developing program, e.g. during special events, must exhibit flexibility with respect to work schedule. Because this position requires interaction with all levels of the university community, applicant must possess excellent communication and customer service skills. Must have a clear understanding of how the recycling program works, what materials are and are not accepted, and have the ability to articulate this to others. Must be cognizant of the fact that personal conduct is representative of the recycling program, and conduct oneself in a courteous and professional manner, always being a champion for recycling.
Pay Grade: 10, WVU provides competitive wages for its employees, and takes experience and related education into consideration when determining appropriate salary.
Shift:7am-3pm
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- A minimum of six (6) months of experience involving:
- Experience working with hydraulic and material handling mechanisms.
- Experience maneuvering trucks and large vans in nan-ow streets and confined spaces, as well as in heavy traffic situations.
- Ability to read and write and perform basic mathematical computations.
- Ability to operate motor vehicles that include, but are not limited to, cars, vans and box trucks, and the hydraulic mechanisms with which they are equipped (lift gates, chain hoists, and other specialized equipment).
- Ability to operate mechanical lifts.
- Ability to operate machinery, such as pressure washers, leaf blowers, etc. Demonstrated excellent communication and customer service skills Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team.
- Demonstrated knowledge of university operations, or the ability to quickly learn them.
- Ability to quickly learn about various programs housed under the recycling umbrella and able to articulate this information to others Ability to perform labor activities (moves, trash removal, etc.) and follow safety procedures.
- Ability to anchor and secure heavy loads in a safe manner.
- Physical capability to perform duties of position, which include walking stairs, bending, stooping, climbing and lifting heavy items. Ability to perform tasks outdoors in various weather conditions, and rotating shifts.
- Ability to flex work schedule around emergencies, weekends, holidays and special events Ability to maintain proper attendance and punctuality standards.
- Ability to operate vehicles and equipment with standard transmissions Demonstrated ability to maintain, service and operate box vans and trucks.
Requirements
- Valid driver's license.
- Incumbent must possess the ability to climb stairs while carryi.ng equipment and/or heavy boxes. Must possess the physical coordination necessary to maneuver a large truck through narrow streets and tight places, as well as in heavy traffic.
