Reporting to the Dean of Student Success: Foundations & Infrastructure, the Director of Housing & Residential Life will be responsible for providing leadership and vision in developing, directing, and implementing a comprehensive housing program for college students. Program functions will include residential life; occupancy management; academic success initiatives; budget and fiscal management; facilities upkeep and operations; and short and long range planning. The Director of Housing & Residential Life is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The Director of Housing & Residential Life will be responsible for the following, but not limited to:
Organizational Strategy
  • Provide leadership to and oversee the development and maintenance of a comprehensive, student-centered housing program.
  • Use student development theory, assessment, data analysis, and national best practices to guide operational philosophies, practices, decision making, and strategic planning.
  • Develop programs and community experiences focused on cultural understanding, personal growth, and academic success.
  • Work collaboratively to develop a positive, comprehensive student living and learning experience.
  • Create, implement and evaluate yearly department goals and learning outcomes.
  • Ensure institutional, state, and federal policies and regulations as they apply to the department and the facility.
  • Ensure department protocols are up to date and align with institutional policies and procedures as well as national best practices.
  • Perform program evaluations and other assessment techniques to respond to needs of students and the campus community.
  • Consult as the subject matter expert with college departments, as needed.
Resource and Human Capital Management
  • Recruit, select, train, coach, support, and evaluate direct report staff.
  • Resolve employee relations issues and consult with Dean and Human Resources on corrective action procedures.
  • Ensure that training and development opportunities for staff and students occurs in a regular, planned, and organized manner focusing on skill building, campus resources, policies, and housing best practices.
  • Develop, plan, and monitor housing budgets and expenditures with Dean of Student Success to assure compliance with college policies and other administrative procedures.
  • Maintain current data on applicants and residents to include but not be limited to occupancy, student payments, inventory, damage reports, and student behavior.
  • Assist in the development of an annual budget proposal.
  • Establish a positive environment that supports pluralism, equity, innovation, teamwork, and successful student outcomes.
  • Provide a framework of on-going support and direction for student groups.
Communication and Collaboration 
  • Collaborates and maintain positive working relationships with college departments and community organizations that impact the student housing experience, including, but not limited to, Student Life, Student Conduct, Title IX, International Education, Athletics, EDI CARES, College Safety & Security, and local law enforcement.
  • Facilitates shared problem solving and decision making.
  • Builds and supports networks and partnerships between students, faculty, staff, and administration.
  • Collaborates with Marketing & Communications to develop and maintain department recruiting and marketing materials, including the housing website, social media, and printed documents that clearly communicates the department’s functions, protocols, values, and goals.
  • Prepares written reports as necessary.
Community Development, Leadership, and Student Learning
  • Creates experiential opportunities that enhance the social, educational, community, and personal development of residents and inspire residents to be active community participants to include but not be limited to orientations and educational programs related to safety and wellness.
  • Assists students in their adjustment to roommates and community living.
  • Interact with residents on a consistent basis. Be visible and present in the residence hall and in programing to include posted office hours.
  • Conducts meetings for the purpose of planning experiences, disseminating information, and explaining policies and procedures.
  • Provides behavioral intervention and resource referral to students including counseling, mentoring, mediation, problem solving and policy violations, and referrals to appropriate campus resources, in collaboration with the Behavioral Intervention and Threat Assessment Team (BITA) and Student Services.
Crisis Management
  • Responds to medical, safety, and security emergencies (some of which may potentially be outside of regular working hours) and to students in personal crisis as needed in conjunction with Pierce College policies and procedures, serve as departmental representative in these situations and exercise independent judgment while maintaining communication with appropriate department representatives and supervisors.
  • In collaboration with the Dean, reviews, assesses, and proposes 24/7 CGS emergency coverage.
  • Performs mediation and interventions as needed.
  • Works with appropriate college officials to resolve any issues regarding health/safety, facilities, privacy, medical care, conflict in order to protect the interests of the college.
  • Reviews incident reports, follow up with students involved.
Other Duties as Assigned
  • Conducts monthly and quarterly health & safety inspections; work with college departments and/or outside vendors to resolve any violations.
  • Serves on departmental and college committees.
  • Works on special job-related projects as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education Required

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
Experience Required
  • Minimum of two (2) years of professional experience in a residence hall setting.
Special Conditions
  • Ability to obtain First Aid/CPR certification within the first three (3) months of employment.
  • Applicants must be able to obtain a Washington State driver's license and be able to operate a company vehicle. 
  • Ability to obtain Food Handler's card within the first three (3) months of employment.

  • Works effectively and efficiently to provide quality services to students and the public; anticipates, meets and/or exceeds student needs and expectations; provides program coordination; recruitment and training for student groups.
  • Values open-mindedness, inclusion, multicultural perspective and multiple ways of knowing, thinking, and being; helps create a work environment that embraces and appreciates diversity; values organizational diversity; treats others with respect; promotes cooperation; recognizes the value of diversity; understands power, privilege and inequity.

Terms of Employment
This is a full-time administrative - exempt position. The primary work location will be near the Pierce College Fort Steilacoom campus, at the Center for Global Scholars residence hall. Frequent travel to Pierce College campuses or other sites may occur. Standard work hours are between 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday, with flexible scheduling to meet students needs which may include evening and weekend hours. 

Salary & Benefits
The salary range for this position is $79,130 to $85,723 annually. Your paycheck is just part of the total compensation package. There is an outstanding benefits package which is worth an additional value equivalent to about 30% of your salary. This position works indoors in an office environment.
