Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a technical field from an accredited University.

License/Certification Required

Registration as Professional Engineer or Project Management Professional or ability to obtain by reciprocity a plus. - Minimum (10) years of progressive management skills and abilities in the field of utilities plant.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Director of the Facilities Operations is responsible for the safe, and efficient operation of the University utility plants and operational maintenance including;

Operations: (65%)
  • Managing the day-to-day operations of the campus in support of the University mission to include planned and unplanned maintenance, utilities, special event support, and transportation solutions.
  • Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the Operational Maintenance Shops to include workload management and effective tracking of all reimbursable work hours.
  • Support of the Athletics Department to include maintenance and stadium operation.
  • Maintenance and repair of all residence halls.
  • Support all other Auxiliary services departments including Bookstore, Food Services, Student Recreation, Plemmons Student Union, etc.
  • Start up and operation of the University Hickory Campus
  • Oversight of the University Energy Manager.
  • Seek to improve the operation of the steam plant, chiller plants and water plants. Keep abreast and comply with all environmental regulatory requirements for operating a potable water system, sewage systems, and storm-water collection systems.
  • Manage three Campus Energy Savings Performance Contracts.
  • Support of minor construction needs of the University by managing the in-house work force effectively.
  • Coordinate with the Planning, Design and Construction Department to ensure new capital projects meet maintenance and other standards.
  • Generate project requirements for the annual Integrated Priority List (IPL) program
Human Resources: (15%)
  • Responsible for approximately 80 staff positions which includes position management, recruiting, and disciplinary actions.
  • Management of the Operations On-Call program to ensure optimal after hours emergency service for the campus.
  • Management of the Operations training and development program
Fiscal Management: (15%)
  • Management of a $2.5 million dollar operation budget and an $11 million dollar utilities budget.
Other Duties: (5%)
  • Participate in the Campus Emergency Operations (EOC) Center for all matters requiring the support of Facilities Operations.
  • Represent the University on the Town of Boone Transportation Committee in the Absence of the AVC for Facilities Management.
  • Management of third party cellular service vendors.
  • Coordinate with the Town of Boone Public Works Departments on projects of joint concern.

Physical Demands of Position

Climbing, standing, walking, talking, repetitive motion, and visual acuity. Medium work exerting up to 50 lbs on occasion. Subject to environmental conditions inside and outside.
