Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • 1-3 years of experience in higher education in a leadership capacity working with student programming and student leadership development.
  • Demonstrated success in collaboration with other departments and groups, organizational skills, team building, and program development.
License/Certification Required

Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Student Development, Higher Education, or a related field.
  • Prefer experience working with transfer or non-traditional populations and/or community college students.
  • Prefer experience supervising and motivating graduate and undergraduate work-study staff.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Assistant Director of Transfer Transition and Engagement will provide transitional and engagement support to new and current transfer students to help them successfully integrate into the campus community, thus increasing the sense of belonging. This will be met through planned and organized transfer engagement events and programming, co-advisement of the Transfer Student Mentor program, and collaboration with other units across campus to develop the programming that will address needs that are unique to transfer students. This position will supervise a Graduate Assistant and work-study students.

Responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to the following:
  • Develop, implement, and facilitate programming out of Transfer Admissions & Engagement relevant to main campus transfer students' needs to be engaged and develop a sense of belonging.
  • Oversee the operations of TAE in Mountain Laurel Hall (MLH), including:
    • Liaison with University Housing staff to ensure TAE is meeting the responsibilities of the Memorandum of Understanding.
    • Create a supportive and engaging environment through the Transfer Student Center in Mountain Laurel Hall. Ensure that the space meets the needs of all transfer students.
    • Chair the MLH Leadership Committee that plans programming and support for the residents of MLH.
  • In collaboration with the Transition & Engagement Specialist:
    • Recruit, select, train and supervise Transfer Student Mentors (TSM's).
    • Coordinate a training program to equip TSM's to perform the functions of their jobs.
    • Assign responsibilities to TSM's such as transitional programming (Orientation, T-POP, Welcome to App), event engagement, call campaigns, student outreach, etc.
    • Maintain a schedule of events in which TSM's will be utilized to support transfer initiatives on campus.
  • Assist the Director of Transfer Recruitment and Retention in retention efforts by:
    • Continue to grow the Faculty Transfer Mentor program across campus. Train and maintain contact with Mentors to ensure they support, outreach, and help retain students.
    • Work with Academic Department to host socials to connect faculty with new transfer students.
    • Follow-up with students identified through the New Mountaineer Form as needing additional support or resources.
  • Communicate with new and current transfer students through a weekly email newsletter (Transfer Scoop), social media, Engage, and other mediums to ensure students are fully aware of the universities resources and events, TAE, and student success strategies.
  • Collaborate with Orientation and Advising as well as the Director of Transfer Recruitment and Retention to ensure that the transfer student experience meets the unique needs of transfer students, ie. Transfer Pre-Orientation Program (T-POP) and Transfer Orientation.
  • Collaborate with Orientation to create transfer programming for Welcome Weekend activities at the beginning of each semester that is relevant and appropriate for main campus transfer students.
  • Promote campus events and activities relevant to transfer student needs, e.g., Career Development, Trailhead Academy, First Ascent, Welcome Weekend.
  • Liaise with the transfer representatives from the Student Government Association.
  • Work closely with Student Affairs units to establish programs addressing the needs of transfer students.
  • Serve as a liaison to other departments within Enrollment Management to secure support and resources needed to successfully transition students to campus.
  • Serve on office and campus-wide committees as deemed appropriate for this position.
  • Support Enrollment Management by working events like Open House, Commencement, etc.
  • Would be expected to drive a van during events.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.
Normal operating hours of the University are Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. This position requires a variable schedule, including evening and weekend work during the fall and spring semesters.
