Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of current trends and developments in international education and in higher education generally, especially learning outcomes, assessment, competencies, and institutional change.

Knowledge of University policies and processes related to financial management and international transactions.

Knowledge of institutional ethos, policies, and effective practices regarding academic advising.

Ability to work with minimal supervision as part of a dynamic team dedicated to promoting and enhancing the University's global engagements.

Demonstrated history of creativity in finding solutions to programmatic challenges, while proposing initiatives to move the Unit toward its goals and objectives.

Demonstrated history of initiating, developing, and sustaining strong positive relations with faculty and staff, program directors, department chairs, college/school deans, and administrators across campus.

Knowledge of one foreign language and a proactive and effective communication style.

Continuous and progressive years of professional experience with proven managerial experience in international academic program development and operations.

Ability to travel abroad and a regular presence at national and international education conferences.

Demonstrated ability to effectively manage large budgets.

Experience with Terra Dotta and Banner integrated management systems.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Excellent interpersonal skills.

Excellent customer service skills.

Understanding of student confidentiality issues and academic protocol.

Ability and willingness to work some evening and/or weekend events.

Attention to detail and the organizational ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously.

Experience living, working, or studying abroad.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Education Abroad unit within the Office of International Education and Development is responsible for facilitating education abroad experiences for Appalachian State University (Appalachian) students (semester and year-long programs, faculty-led programs, internship and community service abroad, international student teaching, and research abroad).
The Director is a visionary international education leader who provides management and oversight of the university's highly-ranked education abroad programs. The Director works closely with the campus community to actively promote the University's education abroad programs designed to provide students with academic and cultural experiences around the world.

Job Duties & Responsibilities include but not limited to:

Sharing and disseminating information on current issues in international higher education, the field of education abroad, and international mobility trends with staff and the University for strategic planning purposes.

Communicating implications of data analysis to upper administration.

The day-to-day management and oversight of all education abroad and works closely with the Associate Vice Chancellor for International Education and Development to create a variety of new programs aimed at diversifying education abroad destinations.

Enhancing effective partnerships with academic units and non-academic units on campus.

Working with the staff to streamline program development processes, manage budgets, assess and manage risk associated with education abroad, communicate and implement policies, develop and monitor performance indicators for programmatic success, and liaise with students, parents, faculty, and program providers.

Representing with considerable independence the University and its education abroad programs throughout the campus, with professional organizations and associations throughout the world, and with current global partners.

Working collaboratively with the staff to reach strategic goals and strengthen the communication of the office with academic and non-academic units, students, and international partners.

Acting as an advocate for international education experiences and serves as the principal liaison with faculty and academic units to integrate international experiences into the curricula.

Managing and supervising a full-time staff of four.
