Prospect Research Specialist
Job Description
The Prospect Research Team at Virginia Tech provides strategic intelligence to Advancement partners working to reach fundraising, participation, and engagement goals. In a division striving for continuous program innovation, the team pursues dynamic solutions to challenges and opportunities that transpire in a changing philanthropic landscape.
The Prospect Research Specialist position is crucial to the fundraising process by providing support to prospect development team members and colleagues within the division through baseline research, pipeline development, data validation, and data entry. This position will provide critical impact through proactive improvements and maintenance in the accuracy and breadth of information within the database.
This role requires intellectual curiosity, creativity, and strong attention to detail. Reporting to the Associate Director of Prospect Research, the successful candidate will be responsible for:
Performing research on constituents using various tools and techniques to identify biographical information, financial capacities, philanthropic interests, and relationships to the university, with a focus on prospects with a giving capacity up to $500,000
Participating in the coordination and validation of wealth and biographical screenings
Monitoring and processing news alerts and publications for constituent updates
Supporting pipeline development and discovery through alerts and donor report review
Improving data management within the database through related requests/projects, audits, and documentation updates
Conducting data entry, mass data imports/changes, and related database initiatives
Contributing to various new and ongoing projects as needed
Required Qualifications
Demonstrated experience working with Microsoft Office applications such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Access
Previous data entry, data audit, or relevant experience
Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate effectively within a multi-team and inclusive environment; demonstrate discretion in working with confidential information
Demonstrated ability to balance competing priorities, meet deadlines, and prioritize multiple assignments in a fast-paced environment with minimal day-to-day supervision
Demonstrated ability to work flexibly and with a high degree of speed and accuracy
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience
Experience working with large relational databases
Research or project management experience
Demonstrated experience with searching online databases/sites and data mining techniques/procedures
