Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in Accounting, Business, Finance or other degree closely related to the area of assignment with twelve hours of accounting and six years of progressive accounting experience, three of which must have been supervisory in nature. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Preferred Qualifications

Public University accounting and financial reporting experience preferred.
Experience with Banner Finance preferred.
CPA or CMA desirable


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The mission of the Controller's Office is to provide accountability for University resources and appropriate dissemination of financial information to maximize the use of University resources in compliance with legislation, Federal and State policies and procedures, Board of Governors, Appalachian State University, and external funding sources.

The primary purpose of this position is to oversee the University's accounting and reporting of long term liabilities, capital assets, capital improvements and investments. This position will manage and compile various internal and external financial reports including the University's Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) and will be a key member of the financial reporting team for the Annual Audited Financial Statements
  • Completion and oversight of key fund/ account reconciliations and payroll reconciliations.
  • Oversees the University's accounting and reporting of long term liabilities, capital assets, capital improvements and investments.
  • Responsible for troubleshooting issues necessary for completion of tasks including modules of Finance, Student, Payroll, HR, and other auxiliary systems.
  • Serves as a lead on the year end financial reporting team and has responsibility for facilitating the completion of the year end ACFR package and Financial Statements.
  • Will compile portions of the year end ACFR package, University Financial Statement note disclosures and blending of component units.
  • Prepare other financial reports such including but not limited to IPEDS.
  • Establish and maintain a business continuity plan for the unit.
  • Review and approve campus journal entries.
  • Ability to research and resolve accounting issues independently.
  • Ability to take on other duties as assigned (to meet the University's business needs) with minimal training.
  • Must be able to work outside of normal work hours during peak season.
This position has potential for a remote work arrangement within the State of North Carolina, consistent with university policy.

Physical Demands of Position

Work consists of activities typically found in an office environment.

Close visual acuity is required to perform activities; prepare and analyze data; transcribe; view computer; extensively read large amounts of accounting data.

Employees in this position may occasionally be required to walk around campus properties to review and inspect the location and status of capital assets.
