Job Summary
The Director of Departmental Operations and Faculty Development provides primary support for departmental operations, specifically in the Biomedical and Translational Sciences (BMTS) Department, and faculty in the Carle Illinois College of Medicine. Key areas of responsibility include providing strategic planning, process development and improvement, and tactical leadership for: administration of departmental operations; faculty recruitment, engagement, and evaluation; faculty development with focus on campus faculty; and faculty appointments and promotions.

Faculty Engagement
  • Work closely with the Head and other college unit leaders to develop, manage, communicate, and deliver faculty engagement opportunities.
  • Provide strategic and operational support to the Health Innovation Professor (HIP) Program including:
o conducting regular strategic needs assessment in the college for HIP faculty;

o collaborating on strategic recruitment of HIP candidates;

o communicating with other units outside the college on the program and process;

o planning and managing Town Hall events and subsequent meetings with department and college leadership;

o collaborating with other units outside of the college and as well as college HR to enable appointments including building and maintaining relationships with these units;

o collaborating with HR to develop content related to HIP activities and content consistent across MOUs, and to facilitate appointment process;

o contributing to improving the process of HIP faculty assessment and evaluation and to managing the process;

o collaborating to develop and improve compensation practices for HIP faculty
  • Provide support to the Department Head and other unit leaders with specific external recruitment and retention cases.
  • Develop and manage mechanisms and processes to measure, track, and report faculty engagement in collaboration with other stakeholders and the Head;
  • Provide strategic and operational support in recruiting and retaining campus and college faculty to BMTS in teaching and service roles in the college.
  • Collaborate on compensation models for campus faculty.
  • Collaborate with the college Office of Advancement in identifying campus faculty to engage with specific donors, foundations, and companies, as needed.
  • Collaborate with other college units to identify and engage campus faculty who might be interested in specific funding opportunities; distribute the information; assist advancement with related aspects of pursuing these opportunities.
Appointments, Promotion and Tenure and Faculty Evaluation
  • In collaboration with department staff, contribute to the management, communication, and revision of policies and procedures for faculty appointments, renewals of appointments, promotions, granting of tenure (if relevant), non-reappointment and dismissal.
  • In collaboration with CI MED Human Resources and department staff, develop or revise, implement, and manage processes and procedures for Appointments, Promotions, and Tenure (APT) review.
  • Provide leadership support to both department and college-level faculty appointments, promotions, and tenure committee.
  • Serve as an ex-officio member on the departmental Appointment, Promotion, and Tenure committee and attend college Appointment, Promotion, and Tenure Committees as needed.
  • Collaborate with department staff and support Department Head in managing the annual faculty evaluation process.
  • In collaboration with Department Head and other unit leaders, develop, implement, manage, and continuously improve the annual scaled evaluation process (0% faculty).
Faculty Development
  • Collaborate with the Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs and Development and the Department Head to develop, implement, track, and manage a faculty mentorship program.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Director of Faculty Development to determine faculty development needs in the areas of instruction, research and scholarship, professional development, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Director of Faculty Development to manage the implementation of department-specific faculty development events.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Faculty Affairs and Development and the department to establish and maintain a database of internal and external awards and professional development opportunities for faculty.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Director of Faculty Development for faculty recognition and award programs, including assisting in the preparation of internal and external award nominations for faculty.
Departmental Administrative Leadership
  • In collaboration with the Head, assess and align departmental goals with the mission of the college.
  • Provide leadership across the department including for strategic initiatives and administrative and operational functions, and the development of growth plans.
o Identify and propose resources as needed to meet departmental goals
  • Provide support to related to faculty governance including overseeing and/or carrying out revisions to departmental level policies and procedures, while ensuring alignment with college and campus policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate the Head and other units to increase efficiency in processes and procedures within the department or affecting department business.
  • Manage faculty compliance activities.
  • Oversee coordination of departmental events and meetings.
  • Develop and manage communications in collaboration with the Head to ensure faculty and staff are informed of department news, policies and procedures, and activities.
  • In partnership with the Chief of Staff to ensure the department's strategic initiatives are in alignment with the initiatives/plans of the College.
  • Work in close collaboration with the Associate Dean for Finance and Administration on the department's fiscal operations including departmental budget oversight.
  • Serve as the Department Head's designee in administrative matters, so indicated by the Head, with signature authority for financial functions.
  • Oversee the voting and appointment process for annual appointments of faculty members to college committees.
  • Supervise department administrative support staff including management of daily work operations and conducting performance evaluations.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships; work cooperatively, collaboratively, and collegially with others in a manner consistent with a workplace of dignity and respect; support and engage in equal employment opportunity principles, rules, and regulations.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field
  • A minimum of 5 years of administrative/management experience in higher education
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in educational leadership or administration, business administration or related field
  • Experience in academic medicine administration, strongly preferred
  • Experience in shared governance and university statutes, policies, and procedures
  • Completion of a leadership or management program(s), preferred

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 10/17/2022. Salary is commensurate with experience.
