Responsibilities
- Act as the campus Environmental, Occupational Health & Safety Officer and liaison representing UT with federal, state and applicable local agencies. Ensure compliance with federal and state laws and regulatory compliance, overseeing incident/accident reporting and injury prevention programs.
- Review and consult with other departments to maintain campus environmental health and safety programs, including hazardous waste management, Safety Data Sheets (SDS) inventory, Global Harmonization Standard, blood borne pathogens exposure plan, confined space program, and chemical and laboratory hygiene program.
- Coordinate on-campus training related to environmental health and safety; co-chair UT Risk Management/Safety committee, and perform inspections of facilities, equipment, work practices, and conduct audits to ensure compliance with legal requirements. Work with Human Resources on safety issues, developing remedies and improvements, and to recommend changes for safer working conditions.
- Perform maintenance, inspection, analysis, and annual state certification of all campus building fire extinguishers, hood systems, sprinkler systems, detection, and alarm systems. Perform quarterly inspections and flow tests of the fire sprinkler systems in all buildings under the jurisdiction of the UT Fire Marshal's office.
- Keep accurate records of fire and life safety systems performed and follow through with all maintenance and required repairs; keep accurate records of all building inspections and follow through on all violation notices with re-inspections.
- Conduct fire education/prevention and portable fire extinguisher training for University faculty, staff, and students as needed. Keep current and informed of building fire prevention and education best practices and techniques. Schedule and conduct building emergency evacuation drills with campus housing and building coordinators.
- Develop and maintain a positive working relationship with faculty, staff, students, and client event groups in planning, scheduling, and implementing logistics, operations, and reconciliation of campus events regarding health and safety. Assist as a campus liaison representing UT with local county and municipal groups, which prepare and implement emergency planning procedures on a statewide and regional scale.
- Assist with Risk Management practices, including certificate of insurance requests, insurance claims, compliance, loss reports and the annual inspection survey. Oversee the campus CERT team and training, and perform routine safety violations inspections campus-wide, including yearly self-inspection surveys.
- Collaborate with University officials in plan reviews for fire safety; act as Fire Marshal in absence of Fire Marshal.
- Maintain knowledge of all fire alarm control panels, remote annunciators, fire extinguishers, AEDs, emergency equipment, fire detection and signaling devices, fire sprinkler risers, and control valve locations within all University buildings. Respond to FACPs and manage the EBI system for trouble signals, pre-alarms, and fire alarms in a timely and safe manner.
- Work with other University Safety & Risk Management staff (central scheduling, parking management, and risk management) to ensure safe and professional services.
- Possess ability to fill in for University Safety & Risk Management staff as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned
- High school diploma/GED, as well as vocational or technical training required in Utah and NICET certifications; Associates and/or Bachelor's degree preferred. The required vocational/technical training includes:
- Automatic Fire Sprinkler System - Level II or higher.
- Fire Alarm Systems Technician - Level II or NICET II; Master Technician preferred.
- Fire Suppression Technician.
- Fire Extinguisher Technician.
- Department will also consider relevant experience and/or ability to get required Utah Licensure and Certification in place within 6 months of hire.
- At least three years' related experience required; experience working with health & life safety and/or fire prevention with an education environment and experience with fire pumps and backflow preferred.
- Experience with environmental health & safety and fire prevention programs; must be familiar with General Industry Safety Standards (OSHA, ANSI, EPA, UL, FEMA, NFPA) and have a thorough knowledge of International Fire Code as well as state and special University regulations (NFPA 13 and 13R, 72, 24, 25, and 101).
- Ability to maintain emotional control under stress while effectively assisting/managing relief efforts.
- Ability to chair committees and coordinate various campus efforts to ensure safe working conditions, while also ensuring action is taken timely and effectively.
- Ability to use computer programs related to certificates of insurance, safety data system inventory, incident/injury reporting, etc.
- Excellent public relations, customer service, and writing skills.
- Ability to lift 25-50 lbs from one level to another, operate a motor vehicle, work outdoors, and perform strenuous walking, standing, and climbing. Lift test will be required as part of the hiring process.
- Must be able to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays, be on-call or as event schedule requires.
