Job Summary

The Department of Biology at Xavier University of Louisiana invites applicants for a nontenure track position in biology at the assistant professor level beginning August 2023. The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in Health Sciences or related field. The department seeks candidates who will teach aspiring Medical Laboratory Scientists in the disciplines of Immunology, Immunohematology, and Microbiology. The candidate must also advise students and be willing to teach additional courses in MLS and the Biology department as needed.

Job Responsibilities:
    The candidate will be able to create and distribute written and laboratory practice assignments.

    The candidate will collaborate with other faculty to exercise uniformity with the program. The department is particularly interested in candidates who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds, minimizing barriers, and increasing equity and completion rates between members of different demographic groups.

    The ideal candidate must have a strong enthusiasm for teaching and dedication in the clinical laboratory, demonstrated by having at least seven years of full-time work experience in the clinical laboratory setting, five years of teaching experience in a clinical laboratory setting, and an additional five years of experience teaching medical laboratory students in higher education.

    This position requires having strong oral and written communication skills, presentation skills, and strong technical laboratory knowledge and skills.
As an Assistant Professor in the MLS Program, the candidate must also be a current board-certified Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP or equivalent) and have earned a doctorate degree in Medical Laboratory Science or the Health Sciences by the hire date. The Department of Biology is the largest in the College of Arts & Sciences at Xavier with a total of 750-800 majors each year. There are 24 full-time faculty members ready to serve all students, including three former XU-Biology graduates. Faculty members in the department are research active and continue to provide opportunities for our students to receive research experience. The department has taken the lead on redesigning and revising our pre-med curriculum so that our students will excel on the redesigned Medical College Admissions Test and to address the growing and urgent national problem of declining numbers of African American professionals in the field of medicine. Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Minimum Qualifications):
    Ph. D. in Medical Laboratory Science or the Health Sciences or related field by the hire date;

    Current board-certified Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP or equivalent);

    Strong commitment to teaching twelve semester hours per semester;

    Ability to develop and teach face-to-face as well as online classes;

    Demonstrated a strong potential for excellence in teaching and mentoring undergraduate students;

    Commitment and experience in a clinical laboratory setting;

    Commitment to academic advising for majors within the department; and

    Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population.
Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Preferred Qualifications):
    Experience working Medical Laboratory Science setting, industry, etc;

    Successful experience teaching undergraduate courses in health sciences;

    Experience in student advising is preferred and experience in student recruitment is highly desirable;

    Evidence of virtual learning;

    Awareness of pedagogical best practices and ongoing commitment to developing and maintaining knowledge in this area
