Job Description

The Senior Director for Communications and Marketing-Colleges will provide strategic communications leadership and support to communications directors and senior leadership in Virginia Tech's nine colleges, working collaboratively to develop strategic alignment and integration between the colleges and Communications and Marketing's centralized resources.

Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Communications and Marketing, the Senior Director will be a co-supervisor to each college communicator and the primary liaison to connect colleges to the resources available in Communications and Marketing and in other colleges and units across the university, as appropriate. In collaboration with Communications and Marketing colleagues and college leadership, the Senior Director will work to ensure consistent approaches across the university's communications enterprise and will seek to create a best-in-class culture of communications and marketing that spans the university's college, unit, and central efforts.

The Senior Director must build strong partnerships with college leadership, central and college advancement officers, and Communications and Marketing colleagues to understand the needs of each area and balance the priorities across college, advancement, and university-level work. This individual must work well in teams, often taking the lead and sometimes serving in a supportive role with other communications personnel.

The Senior Director will support college communication directors by providing meaningful onboarding and best practices and policies to leverage tools, platforms, and resources to meet their priority needs; and by advising communications directors in the development and supervision of their respective teams, including participating in and bringing central, college, and unit colleagues into college search processes. The Senior Director will connect college communicators to Communications and Marketing's centralized resources, including the university homepage and website; the VTx news site; photography, videography and writing resources; Virginia Tech Magazine; editorial strategy, messaging, and communications planning; internal and alumni-focused emails; alumni engagement and philanthropic communications; university advertising and marketing campaigns; media relations; and social media channels. The position will work to integrate each college's communications and marketing plan into a larger, comprehensive university strategic communications and marketing plan in a way that raises the visibility of each college and the national and international profile of the entire university, and the position will ensure the consistent implementation of university brand identity and accessibility standards in college communications.

This position shares the responsibility, alongside college-based leadership, of supporting the college communications directors, including the hiring process and the annual performance evaluation and performance planning process for the directors. In addition, this position will work to provide ongoing training and professional development to communications directors and their teams.

As needed, in support of Communications and Marketing priorities, the Senior Director will create content that could include communications plans, news stories, media pitches, speeches, web updates, and more.
