The vision of PPCC is to become a recognized leader in sustainability, integrating social justice, economic, and ecological values into institutional policies, programs, and practices. The Sustainability Coordinator works with administrators, faculty, staff, and the student body to foster a culture of sustainability throughout the campus and the extended community.
Incumbents work independently in developing and implementing programs or activities for students and staff that advance sustainable practices. The Sustainability Coordinator directs resources and activities related to program practices for the college to include assisting with planning and executing college and community events, grant preparation and implementation, community outreach, and assisting the development of faculty curricular projects related to sustainability. The Sustainability Coordinator works across the college to ensure the coordination of PPCC’s sustainability initiatives.
The college offers the possibility for alternative work arrangements such as flexplace, remote work, or flextime scheduling upon completion of training and department needs.
REPORTS TO: Director of Student Life
- Completed Bachelor’s degree in Sustainability, Life, Physical or Social Sciences, Environmental Management, Environmental Science and Engineering, Environmental Studies, Geography, Industrial Engineering, Urban Planning, or closely related field.
- Two years of professional level experience in sustainable practices, implementation of environmental or sustainable programs, environmental or sustainability education.
- Demonstrated experience in progressively responsible event, workshop/classroom presentation, and/or conference organizing; or an equivalent combination of education and qualifying experience that would likely provide the knowledge and abilities to perform the duties of the position.
- Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of the college’s faculty, staff, and community.
Professional level experience is defined by the Colorado Division of Human Resources: A position that involves the exercise of discretion, analytical skill, judgment, personal accountability, and responsibility for creating, developing, integrating, applying, or sharing an organized body of knowledge. Colorado revised statute (C.R.S. 24-50-135(1) allows colleges to exempt positions from the State Personnel Classified System that are determined to be professional level work.
- Experience working at a community college is highly desirable.
- Possession of a LEED AP certification is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of best practices and sound policies for energy efficiency, retrofitting and cogeneration, water conservation, and institutional waste reduction.
- Experience with website development, HTML, and CSS Code.
- Understanding of purchasing mechanisms for public institutions and knowledge of best practices and sound policies for environmentally sensitive purchasing, and for safe, sustainable practices at multi-site public institutions.
- Understanding of custodial and grounds-keeping systems of multi-site institutions.

Education and Outreach
- Education: Work with the campus community to institutionalize a culture of sustainability and increase the ecological literacy of PPCC community members. The coordinator must be available to make presentations in classes and public forums, and partner with faculty to help direct Independent Study, and service-learning.
- Maintain a strong collaborative relationship with Instructional Services Division to further ecological literacy strategies on the campus with all the deans and departments on campus.
- Marketing, outreach, and communication: The Sustainability Coordinator will document and publicize sustainability progress through outlets that include but are not limited to websites, interviews with media, presentations at local and national conferences, and a sustainability e-mail newsletter. Serve as a liaison to the Colorado Community College System, the City of Colorado Springs, and the greater community in consultation with the Director of Student Life.
- Serve as Club Advisor as the club advisor to the college Sustainability Club.
- Coordinate educational/outreach programming/events centered on sustainability in collaboration with the Student Activities Coordinator.
- Participates in committees, task forces, and workshops to engage with students, faculty, staff, and administration to develop strategies and goals related to sustainability.
- Develop and maintain a comprehensive sustainability plan for the institution.
- Implement college-wide sustainability strategies/objectives from the sustainability plan.
- Recycling to include collaboration with facilities, grounds, custodial staff, and student employees/volunteers: tracking of program results; managing recycling budget; managing services provided by outside vendors.
- Energy Management: coordinate with Facilities Coordinator, electricians, HVAC technicians, and others who may be hired to identify and prioritize energy efficiency and retrofit projects, manage, and apply funds, and track and report on performance. Work with Director, Purchasing, and Facilities to pursue strategies to reduce energy consumption and reduce significant peak demand charges.
- Track and report emissions performance and planned strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
- Water Conservation: Work with Facilities and staff to identify technical retrofits and strategies and apply funding to reduce both domestic and irrigation water. Develop behavioral education to encourage water conservation practices among faculty, staff, and students.
- New construction: Collaborate with the various departments and PPCC construction project members as well as outside consultants to achieve the highest performance buildings possible.
- Provide consultation on already established procedures and the creation of new guidelines regarding waste disposal and conservation practices.
- Strategic Planning: Coordinate strategic sustainability planning efforts and consult in efforts to incorporate sustainability goals into the overall strategic plan for PPCC.
Website Development and Management
- Manage content, design, and maintenance of the PPCC Student Life webpages.
- Serve as the Student Life representative to respective college web councils/committees.
Student Staff Supervision
- Hire, train, mentor, evaluate, and manage student employees and volunteers
Budget & Fiscal Management
- Monitors assigned area budget. Plans and reconciles expenditures; allocates and disburses funds and provides an appropriate rationale for expenditures.
Other duties may be assigned by the Director of Student Life, Associate VP, or VP.

- Initiates and coordinates college-based sustainability programs (e.g., waste reduction and/or composting).
- Coordinates and facilitates campus-based sustainability practices and activities.
- Collaborates with applicable departments and counterparts to prioritize annual campus events to minimize conflicts to maximize the use of campus resources.
- Individually or as a member of a designated team, prioritizes and plans an annual calendar of events to include presentations, demonstrations, and workshops for students and administration.
- Designs and facilitates programs and workshops focused on sustainability. Delivers presentations to classes and community institutions as requested. May provide presentations to classes and administrative meetings. Assists with the development of educational materials that correlate with classroom curriculum.
- Assists students in coordinating studies with sustainability or environmental programs. Fosters collaborative relationships with the community, state agencies, as well as other college resources. Refers students to available services for further information and guidance.
- Supports grant-seeking efforts of the college and department related to sustainability.

- Understanding of energy, water, and waste systems of multi-site institutions.
- Demonstrated ability to navigate effectively and problem-solve and use excellent written and verbal communication.

- Experienced using MS Project or compatible with project management software.
- Ability to deliver student-oriented sustainability programs on a campus with a diverse student body, faculty, and staff.
- Proven ability to manage a service-oriented office environment and create cooperative working relationships both internally and externally.
