Position Highlights

A temporary Research Technician II position is available at the University of Arizona's Maricopa Agricultural Center (MAC) located in Maricopa, AZ. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning, executing, and overseeing greenhouse and field-based research projects centered on Weed Science (weed management, ecology, and biology) in arid environments with a specific focus on annual and perennial agronomic crops. The emphasis of the research program is on integrated weed management, herbicide resistance management, herbicides efficacy, and herbicide selectivity.

The successful candidate will assist in laboratory, greenhouse, and field experiments performing routine technical duties related to conducting experiments on the biology of crop and weed species and the response of plant populations to herbicide applications. This includes duties related to processing of data for analyses, planting weeds, spraying herbicides, assessing herbicide efficacy and crop tolerance, calibrating and maintaining sprayers, maintaining a chemical pesticide inventory (mostly herbicides), and harvesting crops and weed biomass by hand and machine. Additional job responsibilities include towing, unloading, and loading of equipment such as tractors, sprayers, and harvesters on trailers and securing the load for safe travel on roads.

Duties & Responsibilities

Under the supervision of Dr. Jose Luiz C. S.
Dias, execute or co-execute trials and experiments as per instructions,
applying appropriate judgment and discretion. This includes, but is not limited
to, the following:

  • Conducting field research experiments at MAC and at different locations throughout Arizona, including supervision of mechanical operations, crop management, pesticides handling and application, data collection, resource management, labor etc.
  • Operating research equipment, including regular maintenance and calibration of sprayers, as well as machinery associated with field research and providing instruction to others on the correct use of equipment.
  • Towing, unloading, and loading of equipment such as tractors, sprayers, and harvesters on trailers and securing the load for safe travel on roads.
  • Overseeing the maintenance of vehicles, tractors, planting equipment, harvesters, herbicide sprayers and a granule applicator.
  • Recording field data and operational parameters during spray applications, maintaining research data in field notebooks, and entering data into computer software packages (e.g., MS Excel and Agricultural Research Manager).
  • Performing clerical tasks such as filing, typing, labeling, and requisitioning supplies and materials.
  • Assist with organization of training and employees, ensuring priorities are set and that work is performed safely, accurately, and efficiently.
  • Integrating multiple priorities and work activities to successfully meet departmental and seasonal deadlines in an efficient manner.
  • Assist with inventory management procedures.
  • Assist other team members as needed.
  • Generate written reports and present them to the supervisor/team.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent, or
    equivalent learning attained through experience required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience required.
  • Ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree in agronomy, plant science, or related biological field with demonstrated research or field experience and minimum of 3 years experience.
  • Experience with field crop research and experimentation including operation of related field equipment.
  • Experience with handling and applying pesticides.
  • Pesticide applicator license from the state of Arizona.
