Job Description

The Academic Finance Analyst will have a broad range of analytical responsibilities that support the strategic allocation of resources across the academic enterprise at Virginia Tech.
Reporting to the Assistant Vice Provost for Finance, the Academic Finance Analyst will be responsible for a variety of tasks including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Analyzing key academic performance and financial data and providing insights to support institutional decision-making.
  • Providing trend and forecast analyses and recommend actions for improvement or optimization.
  • Developing and analyzing financial plans and models to support university strategic initiatives.
  • Supporting the annual academic budget development process and working to advance the evolution of the university's academic performance budget model.
  • Working closely with the Office of Analytics and Institutional Effectiveness to broaden the accessibility of data insights to campus stakeholders.
The responsibilities of this positions will provide the candidate the opportunity to deepen their understanding of university budgeting/finance processes while leveraging a wide set of related data sources (e.g., student, finance, human resources, etc.). The candidate will be expected to work independently on some tasks and effectively collaborate with a variety of campus stakeholders on other tasks. The candidate must also be able to understand (or quickly learn) key institutional performance drivers and demonstrate attention to detail in work performed.
This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement after an initial period of on-site training.

Required Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in public administration, business administration, or a related field; or a Bachelor's degree in a related field with equivalent experience/training
  • Progressive experience in accounting, budgeting, and/or financial analysis
  • Experience gathering, analyzing, interpreting, and presenting complex information
  • Proven proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Microsoft Excel to include use of advanced formulas and functions
  • Experience with data query tools
  • Detail oriented for accuracy of data and information
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including excellent communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with budgeting and/or financial planning within higher education
  • Proven experience with databases, functional querying, and/or data mining (e.g. SQL, DAX, etc.)
