Department Head/Associate/Full Professor
Northwestern State University is seeking an individual to serve as the Head of the Department of Mathematics. The individual selected will be responsible for the total academic and fiscal control of the Department of Mathematics which comprises academic areas of mathematics including mathematics education, healthcare informatics, and actuarial mathematics. They will be responsible for maintaining the academic rigor of the Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics.
The Department of Mathematics is the academic home for the undergraduate areas of mathematics, healthcare informatics, and actuarial mathematics. The Department currently has 14 full-time faculty, 1 full-time staff, and 20+ part time instructors. It provides general educational instruction for all University students and is committed to high standards in innovative teaching, research, and providing a quality educational experience. The Department is an established leader in using technology as a tool for learning. Northwestern State University is located in Natchitoches, Louisiana, the oldest permanent European settlement in the Louisiana Purchase. It is approximately one hour south of Shreveport. The University is a member of the University of Louisiana System.
PhD or comparable terminal degree required. Previous teaching experience is preferred. The successful applicant will hold a terminal degree in an area related to programs within the Department of Mathematics. Additionally, that person should present credentials that would qualify them for the rank of associate or full professor. Applicants should provide evidence of skills in personnel management, budget preparation, hiring, scheduling of classes, student retention, successful grant writing, and current knowledge of technological applications. If selected for an interview, applicants should be prepared to discuss strategies for attracting undergraduate majors. Applicants should also be prepared to provide a vision for success which could apply to Northwestern State University.
The individual selected will be responsible for the total academic and fiscal control of the Department of Mathematics which comprises academic areas of mathematics including mathematics education, healthcare informatics, and actuarial mathematics. They will be responsible for maintaining the academic rigor of the Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. Additionally, they must work with the entire University community as the leader of a strong academic service unit providing instruction for multiple general education courses. The individual selected will be expected to work closely with faculty of diverse ranks to ensure the promotion of academic and scholarly excellence as well as a positive, visionary, student-oriented, and caring academic atmosphere. In addition, the individual selected will be expected to maintain a minimum teaching load of 6+ contact hours each academic semester, participate in scholarly activities, and work closely with University and community leaders to promote mathematics at regional, national, and international levels. They will be expected to assist the University in identifying and recruiting talented and gifted faculty and students to the Department from the United States and beyond.
