The faculty of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy is committed to offering an innovative student-centered, constructivist curricula designed to engage students in generative, critical thought. As the leader of the academic programs of the residential academy, the Dean advances curriculum and assessment aligned to revised Standards of Significant Learning (SSLs) that transitions the Academy to competency and performance-based instruction. The Dean is also responsible for supporting and advancing equity and excellence throughout the academic programs. Development of an assessment plan including a critical review of appropriate metrics and measures is an instrumental element of this role. Inherent with this role is the willingness and ability to collaborate with, gather input from, and consider input from students, parents, and staff, including faculty. In addition, the Dean will collaborate closely with the Dean of Student Support and Equity and the Principal to support the Academy’s mission.

This position will support IMSA's diversity work by ensuring the delivery of quality, equitable, and inclusive constituent-centered support, while promoting and maintaining an inclusive work environment and culture, that embraces the diversity of people and perspectives collaborating at IMSA, to ignite and nurture creative, ethical, scientific minds that advance the human condition.

Responsibilities

  1. Supervise
    •  Lead the Student Inquiry and Research (SIR) Management team under the guidance of the Principal and Chief Academic Officer,
    • Faculty in partnership with the Principal and Chief Academic Officer
    • Administrative support with others in the Principal’s Office
  2. Plan, implement and evaluate curriculum design and assessment
    • Make a general assessment of IMSA’s intended curriculum
    • Promote and facilitate interdisciplinary curriculum throughout IMSA’s academic programs 
    • Support the continued integration and implementation of UN-SDGs into curriculum as part of IMSA’s identity as a learning laboratory
  3. Assess student learning and student learning outcomes
    • Review, revise, and embed into all course syllabi the Standards of Significant Learning (SSLs) in collaboration with faculty
    • Create and implement a plan to incorporate the work of Office of Institutional Research in the creation and assessment of IMSA’s intended curriculum by each academic team
    • Evaluate and revise assessments as appropriate to ensure equity
  4. Lead the accreditation process
  5. Lead the process of new course adoption
    • Ensure Learning Opportunities (the course catalogue) is updated and provided for Board approval
    • Review and recommend revised graduation requirements as needed
    • Identify and recommend culturally appropriate and responsive, student-centered curriculum, materials and approaches for the Academy
  6. Serve as program manager of the Mastery Transcript Consortium
  7. Facilitate the implementation of Equity and Excellence in curriculum and assessments
    • Lead the review of existing policies and practices through an equity lens for their impact on the intended curriculum; develop faculty accountabilities and metrics as applicable in collaboration with Principal’s Office
    • Implement policies and accountability plans related to the scope of this position
Qualifications

The required skills and experience for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Advanced degree; STEM field preferred;
  • Minimum of five years teaching high-school or college level students;
  • Significant leadership experience in secondary or higher education;
  • Bilingual in Spanish desired.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

Work is performed in an office setting with minimal exposure to health or safety hazards. Substantial time is spent working on a computer. This role generally requires mobility, written and verbal communication, hearing and visual capabilities. However, reasonable accommodations, including assistive technology, may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform such requirements.

Salary and Benefits:

The position of Dean of Academics and Equity is an exempt, full-time, twelve-month position. Salary will be no less than $105,000 and commensurate with the training and experience expected at this level of employment. An excellent comprehensive benefits package is provided, including health and life insurance in addition to retirement benefits. The State Universities Retirement System (SURS) is reciprocal with other Illinois retirement systems such as the Teachers’ Retirement Systems of Illinois (TRS).
