The Position:

The University of Wyoming seeks to hire a research leader at the associate or full professor level who will direct a new Laboratory for Regional Earth Systems Modeling. The successful candidate is expected to have an exceptional record of externally funded research and national leadership in regional earth systems modeling with promise of integrating multiple processes and interactions in coupled models to support adaptation to changing water availability and climate-driven disturbances. This position offers tremendous opportunities to strengthen collaborations with the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and to leverage existing world-class capabilities of the UW Advanced Research Computing Center, UW's high-performance computer cluster – Teton - and the NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputer Facility.

The Position:

  • Provides an academic appointment and tenure home in the Haub School for Environment and Natural Resources, with an opportunity for joint appointment with the School of Computing;
  • Includes a leadership role associated with a newly awarded $20 million NSF project on climate change, shifting water availability and socioecological responses in the nation’s headwaters region of the Greater Yellowstone Area;
  • Will advise in the recruitment of four additional tenure track faculty positions into a Laboratory for Regional Earth System Modeling;
  • Will work with MS and PhD students and post-doctoral scholars; and
  • Provides access to significant start-up resources to build a successful and durable research program.



  • PhD in a relevant discipline and record of scholarship appropriate for rank of associate or full professor with tenure;
  • Evidence of significant accomplishment and leadership in integrated regional earth system modeling;
  • Demonstrated leadership in the application of coupled models to address human management in a changing world;
  • Demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinary research; and
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.


  • Interest or experience in natural resource issues in the Intermountain West;
  • Interest in linking the physical and social sciences;
  • Interest in or experience with co-production processes engaging stakeholders and communities in modeling; and
  • Higher education teaching experience.

About the Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources:

The University of Wyoming’s Haub School advances the understanding and resolution of environment and natural resource issues. The Haub School’s academic programs are a nexus for interdisciplinary environment and natural resources education and inquiry, including a new BS in Outdoor Recreation and Tourism Management and a new MS in Environment, Natural Resources and Society. The School’s curricula emphasize collaborative and interdisciplinary approaches that prepare students to become thoughtful future leaders and problem-solvers in the environment and natural resources fields. Students learn in the classroom, in real-world enterprises, in Wyoming’s outstanding natural outdoor laboratory, and overseas. The Haub School has a strong community-based culture and has recently experienced unprecedented growth in students, faculty, outreach, and UW financial support. In FY20, the Haub School had 380 undergraduate and 58 graduate students enrolled. The School includes 22 faculty and 5 staff; additional academic support is provided by professors of practice, academic professionals, and visiting scholars. Wyoming and the Western United States enjoy an unparalleled richness of natural resources and face many complex challenges regarding the management of those resources. This complexity provides an opportunity for faculty, students, and staff at the Haub School to work with partners to learn about issues, to bring knowledge to bear on those issues, and to facilitate collaborative decision making.

The Ruckelshaus Institute, a division of the Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources at the University of Wyoming, advances the understanding and resolution of complex environmental and natural resources challenges and supports stakeholder-driven solutions to environmental challenges by conducting and communicating relevant research and promoting collaborative decision making.

Background: NSF EPSCoR Grant:

The University of Wyoming announced in May 2022 that it had received a $20 million grant from the National Science Foundation to study climate-driven changes to Wyoming’s water supply and all the impacts that will follow. The grant was made through the Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) of NSF, which supports efforts to enhance research, science and mathematics education, and workforce development. The project funded is called WY-ACT: Wyoming Anticipating Climate Transitions. The project will fund creation of a Laboratory for Regional Earth System Modeling (LRESM) and the launch of a Center for Climate, Water, and People.

The project provides initial funding for five new faculty positions. The University has committed to continued funding for these positions once NSF funding ends. The Regional Integrated Earth Systems Modeler position is the first of these five new faculty positions and, as the “lead” hire for the project, and Director of the LRSEM, will be responsible for leading collaborative work to design and equip the Laboratory for Regional Earth System Modeling and will have input in the hiring of four new faculty members. The position is for an integrated modeler who can direct the development of a comprehensive model that projects climate, weather, hydrology, watersheds, botany, forest ecosystems, agriculture, and social and economic systems. The position will report to the Dean of the Haub School for Environment and Natural Resources but will collaborate with various academic departments at the University.
