West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a News and Information Manager with University Relations.

About the Opportunity

As the News and Information Manager you will report to the Director of News Communications within University Relations and Enrollment Management and is a key position in University Relations' Office of Communications, overseeing content management, monitoring and media interactions involving units from across the University. You willdirectly participatein both the day-to-day and long-term management of the department, including crisis communications planning and response, collaborating with its Managing Editor, Internal and Student Communications Manager and others who produce a wide range of communication products. You will also suggest, researchand/or frequently writenews stories (including on research) for use on WVUToday, in WVU Magazine or for media.

The News and Information Manager has primary responsibility for compiling and prioritizing earned media content on a daily basis to help inform and assist University leaders. In addition, the News and Information Manager will be responsible for WVU Weekly, the University's periodic internal report of WVU in the news and news reports highlighting topics and trends of interest in higher education.

What you'll do:

  • Providing day-to-day leadership in the department's news and media relations operations, overseeing content management, monitoring and media interactions involving units from across the University.
  • Directly participates in both the day-to-day and long-term management of the department, including crisis communications planning and response, collaborating with its Managing Editor, staff of writers, photographers and others who produce a wide range of communication products.
  • Primarily responsible for compiling and prioritizing earned media content on a daily basis to help inform and assist University leaders via Cision management system and other vehicles.
  • Producing WVU Weekly, the University's periodic internal report of WVU in the news and news reports highlighting topics and trends of interest in higher education.
  • Works closely with the broader UREM team to advance the University's reputation using the entire range of internal and external communication vehicles and platforms.
  • Assists Communications team in fielding incoming media queries and working to provide knowledgeable, factual and timely sources or information; assist in arranging news conferences and briefings; and planning and managing media visits to campus.
  • Keeps current on state and national higher education issues and trends by monitoring social and traditional media.
  • Represents WVU at appropriate events, particularly those involving media.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of News Communications and other UREM leaders.


Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communication, integrated marketing/communication, or a related field. Master's degree preferred.
  • Five (5)years of experience in the following;
    • Media relations, crisis communications, social and digital medi a.
    • Experience interviewing, writing and editing across platforms
    • Journalism/marketing practices and deadlines.
    • Demonstrated success in communications / media relations.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of and interest in current media trends, including tools and platforms, and ability to integrate advances into current practice.
    • Demonstrated planning, organizational, teamwork and time management skills.
    • Demonstrated experience in crisis and issues management.
    • Demonstrated experience, or interest in, developing communication strategies and platforms.
    • Demonstrated commitment to maintaining and promoting a cohesive work environment.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of acceptable (AP) journalism style.
    • Exceptional written and interpersonal communication skills.
    • Demonstrated computer proficiency for standard office equipment; web-based new media skills.
    • Demonstrated enthusiasm/attitude toward work and profession and the ability to foster that commitment in others.
    • Demonstrated ability to provide accurate, dependable and useful information to traditional and social media and constituency groups.
    • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with print, broadcast and new media, as well as with colleagues inside and outside the University.
    • Ability to success fully pitch news stories and experts in various news stories and platforms.
    • Ability to think creatively and strategically.
    • Ability to maintain proper unit attendance and punctuality and to work extended hours, including weekends and evenings, when the news dictates.
    • Ability to travel.
    • Ability to function professionally under deadlines, sometimes stressful situations.
    • Ability to multitask and independently plan and organize work.
    • Ability to meet various deadlines and schedules.


Requirements

Valid driver's license required to be able to travel across campus and outside Morgantown to visit media outlets and for other purposes.
