JOB SUMMARY: Primary responsibility for instruction in Adult Basic Education/High School Education, Work Readiness, Basic Computer Applications, and Literacy to student inmates at the Iowa Correctional Institution for Women in Mitchellville. Provides competency-based quality instruction in accordance with the stated philosophy and objectives of the College in classroom, lab and clinical settings. Assignment may include evening or off-campus teaching, individualized and/or competency-based instruction and/or online/distance learning.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Evaluate individual student inmates to determine placement and program of instruction needed. Instruct student inmates in reading, writing, math, language skills, social studies, and science as needed to bring individuals to a level of competency for successful HiSET testing. Administer practice tests to determine readiness for HiSET testing. Complete student inmate enrollment forms and maintain accurate attendance and scholastic records. Prepare reports as requested. Teach assigned courses in accordance with course competencies and syllabi. Develop and/or utilize a variety of instructional strategies, techniques and delivery methods designed to meet the individual learning styles of students. Foster a safe and civil learning environment. Develop and maintain current course syllabi and outlines; prepare lecture/lab and class materials. Inform students about course requirements, evaluation procedures, and attendance policies. Participate in the ongoing development and revision of curriculum and course materials and competencies, and in the selection of textbooks and other instructional materials/equipment.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree. Current State of Iowa Standard Teaching License (elementary and/or secondary certification).Demonstrated communication and human relation skills. Knowledge of basic skill instructional methods in one or more of the following areas: English grammar and usage, mathematics or reading. Demonstrated effectiveness working with populations having diverse values, and/or coming from varied cultures and backgrounds.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience working with adults in a correctional setting. Teaching experience with adults. Ability to work effectively with students in a prison setting. Knowledge of current software applications including Microsoft Office.
