The Vice President - Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) is an exciting new position to Shoreline Community College (SCC). The primary responsibility is to advance SCC's diversity, equity and inclusion, in partnership with the Executive Team and consistent with the mission and values of the organization, by recommending, developing, implementing, and managing both internal and external diversity related strategies, partnerships, and programs. This position will report to the President of the College and serve as the College's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Leader (DEIL) within state reporting structures and the College's primary administrator for employees at SCC. As a member of the Executive Team, this position will provide leadership, vision, training and support to the College for DEI.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
- In collaboration with Institutional Effectiveness, develop processes and systems which includes compiling, forecasting, creating, measuring, and assessing DEI metrics to build on and leverage existing strengths and resources Develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive DEI website including resources, training opportunities, College DEI projects and groups, and a blog for DEI news and updates.
- Develop and implement a quarterly employee professional learning schedule which promotes cultural understanding and responsiveness.
- Work with Executive Team members to revise and update College webpages, social media pages, etc. to increase the use of inclusive communication practices.
- In conjunction with HR, develop and deliver training to supervisors for best practices to support, evaluate, and retain employees of diverse backgroundsPrepare quarterly reports to the campus community regarding DEI efforts and achievements.
- Maintain the annual College's campus climate survey and state mandated DEI strategic planIn collaboration with ET members, develop a multi-year equity framework for DEI learning.
- Create collaborative structures supporting culture shifts for improvement and accountability Lead and direct professional learning which supports diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) across employee groups and the campus community through the use of the Inclusive Excellence model Engage with various College constituencies and, where appropriate, coordinate shared work with social justice and DEI groups on and off-campus.
- Represent Shoreline's DEI efforts within the College, in the community, with professional organizations, state boards, commissions, and other agencies.
- Provide administrative direction and lead campus DEI employee professional learning and activities (such as the Faculty/Staff of Color Conference and affinity groups)Practice cognitive empathy in understanding the complexity of diversity on a college campus.
- Create an accountability system to implement and monitor College strategic goals assuring DEI principles and practices in College policies and procedures are met
- Provide a DEI and intersectional lens to the review and establishment of College policies and procedures that reinforce diversity in the workplace and aligns with strategic goals.
- Build the capacity of college councils and committees to use an equity and intersectional lens when reviewing their practices so they are inclusive and culturally responsive
- Provide leadership to the Inclusive Excellence Steering Committee by promoting teamwork and implementing DEI activities that align with our strategic plan
- Review current strategies and approaches to retain and attract diverse candidates and work with the Human Resource department to train and implement effective practices and programs such as: Search Advocate Program and Multi-Cultural Interview Rubric.
- Manage the new employee onboarding practices specific to workforce diversity and inclusion Work closely with the President and Executive Team members to make data informed decisions regarding employee DEI professional learning Collaborate with the Vice President for Student Learning, Equity, and Success on faculty development in support of diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout instructional activities.
- Collaborate with the Vice President for Student Learning, Equity, and Success to support efforts to close equity gaps for students where professional learning for staff is needed.
- Prepare/administer DEI budget, including the determination of staffing and operational needs Prioritize and allocate resources to ensure maximum DEI service delivery.
- Attend meetings and conferences ensuring DEI needs and concerns are represented. Direct the preparation of a variety of written correspondence, reports, procedures, and other materials to maintain working and official departmental files. Implement DEI policies and procedures including maintaining records and data to allow for evaluation, problem-solving, and improvements.
- Keep current with laws, regulations and technology that may affect departmental, divisional or unit operations.
- Perform other duties as assigned (of a similar nature or level).
REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- Master's degree from an accredited institution OR equivalent combination of education/experience
- Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience leading diversity, equity, and inclusion programs
- Administrative or leadership experience in an education environment
- Experience translating equity and inclusion best practices into operational processes.
- Best practices in professional learning in diversity, equity, and inclusive excellence in higher education.
- Race and equity issues, critical race theory, multicultural and global responsiveness, organizational change management, and adult learning principles.
- Equal Employment Opportunity law, including the Americans with Disabilities Act and other related state or federal regulations.
- Microsoft Office 365 Access, Excel, Word, and Outlook, as well as electronic data systems.
- Policy development, analysis, and implementation; budgeting principles.
- National, local, and specialized DEI organizations pertinent to higher education employees.
- Fostering a climate of equity and belonging through multicultural awareness and responsiveness.
- Developing, implementing and evaluating processes which support the inclusive excellence model.
- Providing leadership, motivating, training, and evaluating DEI work at a variety of levels.
- Developing systems to support inclusive excellence, diversity, multicultural responsiveness, and equity.
- Leading change management efforts to boost employee diversity and inclusion behaviors.
- Resolving situations using sound judgment and an understanding of identity and DEI principles.
- Effectively establishing and maintaining working relationships at all organizational levels by building coalitions through demonstrating strong listening, mediating, problem solving, and interpersonal skills.
- Coordinating work outcomes and activities with multiple partners under competing deadlines.
- Interpreting applicable laws, regulations, and policies; preparing clear and concise written materials.
- Effectively communicating (written/oral) with individuals at all levels inside and outside of the College.
- Researching/developing metrics for measuring the effectiveness of diversity initiatives implemented.
PHYSICAL WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The College is currently providing services in a mixed modality of operations (both online and in-person services are offered). Administrators are assigned to work on campus, noting there may be some opportunities to work remotely based on program or area needs. If authorized for limited remote work, employees will need to provide their own workspace and internet access, noting the College will provide technical equipment and support for online work needs. When working on-campus, this position will perform work in a standard office setting, use standard office equipment and physically attend meetings both on and off campus, using the ability to communicate in person or through appropriate means. This position also works work weekends and evenings when appropriate or needed is required.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT/SALARY:
This is a full-time administrative/exempt annually contracted position with initial salary placement determined by the College dependent upon education/experience. Hiring of this position is contingent upon available funding as determined by the College President.
