Job Summary

This position is primarily responsible for managing the public service functions of the Taggart Law Library in the morning and afternoon hours during the academic year. Several of the chief tasks include facilitating library functions, coordinating circulation desk operations, assisting library patrons, supervising student assistants, updating database information, performing various collection maintenance activities, and processing library materials including purchased and archival items. This position serves as the primary staff member opening the library on weekdays, and reports directly to the Director of the Law Library.

Scope

Support the Taggart Law Library by supervising the circulation desk and maintaining the operation and security of the library in the morning and afternoon hours Monday through Friday from 7:30am until 4:00pm during the academic year. Other hours and/or duty days may be assigned during breaks, holidays, and summer sessions, or as needed.

Principal Responsibilities
  • Work Monday through Friday while classes are in session and serve as primary staff member on duty to open the library during weekday mornings
  • Oversee the operations of the library through responding to inquiries regarding library services and policies, performing basic problem solving, and assisting library patrons including faculty and staff, students, alumni, and community users
  • Coordinate circulation desk operations such as checking books in and out, shelving, maintaining library collections and equipment, and assisting patrons with locating materials using the POLAR library catalog and other search resources
  • Provide friendly and helpful service to library users, employing good judgment to help solve a wide range of problems
  • Take primary responsibility for law library student workers, including interviewing, hiring, scheduling, training, work assignments, supervision, and disciplinary measures as needed
  • Process OhioLINK and interlibrary loan materials through printing slips, pulling and checking out books, packaging and shipping materials, receiving borrowed materials, recording exchanges, and sending notifications to patrons
  • Use the Sierra integrated library system to identify and update bibliographic records for the reserve collection, create and maintain patron records and course reserve records, note missing materials, remove fines, search for materials, and conduct related library operations
  • Assist librarians by gathering, organizing, and preparing books and other needed materials for instructional sessions, workshops, research projects, and other operations
  • Assist with materials processing tasks and other operational duties as assigned
  • Assist with special project work in response to library and College of Law needs, including projects related to the Law Library Technical Services department, Law Admissions, Law Dean's Office, and others
  • During special events, serve as the building host for events held in the Hanson Reading Room, including directing attendees, event organizers, and caterers, coordinating set-up and tear-down of the Reading Room, and facilitating a smooth, positive experience for all
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate's Degree or equivalent education
  • Two to three years of customer service experience
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent education
  • Previous experience working in a library, archive, museum, or related cultural institution
  • Prior experience working independently as sole staff member on duty
