Position Highlights
The School of Animal and Comparative Biomedical Sciences (ACBS) in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is seeking a well-organized and highly motivated person for the position of Academic Advisor II for Microbiology. In this position, you would have the opportunity to work with undergraduates majoring and minoring in Microbiology and support them through their undergraduate career.Academic advisors serve as frontline contacts for undergraduate students for developmental academic advising to drive engagement and empower students to achieve their academic and career goals. Advisors play a vital role in maximizing undergraduate student retention.

Duties & Responsibilities
Student Advisement:
- Assess individual students' stage of development
(academic and career) and promotes their growth by determining suitable
developmental tasks. - Advise students on matters ranging from developing
academic plans to academic policy, career options, and student engagement
opportunities. - Advises and assists student
with preparing and applying to graduate or professional school. - Refer students to appropriate departmental
offices, faculty, and support services for help with academic, personal,
and career counseling, academic skills development, and financial aid
support. - Evaluate use of transfer credit and determine
whether or not degree requirements have been met. - Support students in establishing realistic and
attainable academic and career goals. - Assist undergraduate students in determining
educational plans, choosing courses, and exploring majors, minors, and
career options. - Identify educational and career options
appropriate for each student and assist student with evaluating each
option, including possible outcomes and their implications. - Counsel students on options to satisfy degree
requirements. - Monitor students' academic progress, determine
satisfactory progress toward degree, and assist students in completion. - Identify current and potential needs or problem
areas (ex. Study skills, tutoring). - Advise students with academic difficulty on development
of an academic action plan and refer students to appropriate campus
resources for assistance as needed. - Using University systems, maintain student files,
records, and advisor's notes. - Maintain knowledge of regulations and policies
that impact students' educational options. - Refers to policies and practices for guidance but
determines best course of action to achieve results. - Serve as one of the department's graduate program
coordinators in the areas of recruitment and admissions. - Other duties as assigned (typically less than 5%
of time).
Service to Department(s)
or School(s):
- Works with departments to identify curriculum
problems and develops and recommends solutions. - Acts as liaison between Microbiology faculty
members, departments, and students to interpret policies and practices and
determine the best course of action for all parties. - Serves on Microbiology Curriculum and Executive
Committees. - Serves on CALS Curriculum Committee and ACBS
Scholarship Committee. - Assist and attend department events related to
students.
Service to College and
University:
- Attends monthly and bi-monthly meetings to stay
up-to-date on policy and processes across campus and the College. - Assists with Transfer and First Year Orientation,
including evaluating incoming students' credits, representing their majors
to incoming families and students, and making referrals to appropriate
resources. - Assist and attend College level events related to
students.

requirements at the University of Arizona. - Proficiency with University of Arizona Student
Information Systems (UAccess). - Ability to develop basic printed materials and
website content to assist advising and recruitment efforts.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required.
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience is required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree (completed or in progress).
- Experience in the area of Microbiology.
- Previous experience serving undergraduate students in academic advising or other student-related services at the University of Arizona or similar higher education institution.
- Experience using UAccess Analytics.
- Demonstrated successful experience working with post-secondary students.
