Position Highlights

This position is part of THINK TANK, a student academic service unit within the division of Student Success and Retention Innovation(SSRI). THINK TANK serves as a focal point for the University's centralized learning assistance and learning enrichment services. The Tutoring Services Coordinator provides administrative and program oversight for the content based tutoring services being provided at THINK TANK. The services include both free and fee based tutoring provided to UA students in both centralized and satellite locations. These services are integral to the University's overall retention efforts. Under the direction of the Associate Director, the Tutoring Services Coordinator leads, coordinates, and supervises various programs and activities of the University's tutoring programming, insuring fulfillment of departmental goals and objectives. The Tutoring Services Coordinator assists with the strategic planning, budget forecasts, and articulation of mission and vision of the department.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and supervision to the content based tutorial staff at THINK TANK; establish work priorities
  • Set program policy and procedures, in conjunction with the Director and Associate Director
  • Identify needs, develops innovative support services, and improves effectiveness of existing services
  • Provide leadership in developing and implementing an exemplary and comprehensive content based tutoring program to serve all UA students
  • Develop tutor training program for tutors
  • Maintain International Tutor Program Certification through College Reading and Learning Association (ITTPC)
  • Determine structure and staffing of tutorial services in the centers, within budgetary constraints
  • Supervise Content Tutor Coordinator and Graduate Assistant positions
  • Oversee the daily operations and coordinates tutor program activities at all locations
  • Monitor program effectiveness and quality at all centers offering tutoring support
  • Serve as a technical and methods expert for tutors' special needs
  • Develop, support, and help implement University-wide learning initiatives, involving tutoring support, as it relates to retention
  • Work closely with THINK TANK staff, on the development of content-based tutorial services for students identified as being in academic need, including but not limited to Schedule for Success (S4S) programming
  • Develop the means by which students will be referred into tutorial services
  • Coordinate work with tutoring components of the SALT Center and C.A.T.S. Academics
  • Provide professional development support to colleagues and staff within the content based tutoring program
  • Interact and maintain liaisons with students, faculty, and staff in facilitation of program objectives
  • Collaborate with retention programs (New Start, Bear Down Bridge program, Residence Life, etc.) across campus to provide academic support for programming
  • Assist the Associate Director in center fiscal planning and in writing grants and proposals
  • Assist the Associate Director in budget preparation
  • Monitor expenditures related to content-based tutorial services
  • Consider alternative means of funding content-based tutorial services
  • Participate in research goals of department through program development, implementation, evaluation, and modification
  • Prepare utilization reports
  • Prepare analytical data for tutoring functions
  • Monitor all content based tutoring data; reports trends, problems, or areas where utilizations, costs or ratios vary from established parameters
  • Design and conduct special program evaluation activities, with Assessment Coordinator, in order to maintain program credibility
  • Design and implement program modifications based upon evaluation of outcomes, student needs, and staff feedback
  • Provide problem solving assistance, interpret departmental policy and procedures pertaining to tutoring
  • Responsible for regularly communicating the progress, outcomes, and direction of work to the Associate Director
  • Make recommendations concerning improvement of programs and services
  • Develop and facilitate workshops or seminars. Prepare presentations for other professionals as requested
  • Participate in professional organizations to promote own professional growth and development
  • Support the THINK TANK through participation in a variety of departmental activities, assignments, and committees

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of tutoring principles and practices
  • Knowledge of tutoring program coordination practices and strategies
  • Knowledge of leadership, management, and supervision principles and practices
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills
  • Excellent oral, written, and facilitation skills
  • Ability to support a diverse student population
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and high degree of openness to new approaches and new ideas

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, or other appropriate field AND
  • Three years of directly related administrative/coordinative experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Education, or other appropriate field
  • Five years of experience in student academic support programming
  • Experience working with FERPA and ethical principles in work with tutors and students
  • Experience with University of Arizona student-worker hiring procedures and policies
  • Tutor Program Coordination experience
