Position Summary

The Associate Dean for Academic Advising is a newly created position at Fordham. The incumbent will have the unique opportunity to lead a major restructuring in undergraduate academic advising in Fordham’s two liberal arts colleges.

After considerable study and consultation, the Deans of Fordham College at Lincoln Center (FCLC) and Fordham College at Rose Hill (FCRH) are implementing a new model for advising for undergraduates in our colleges: a unified professional advising center led by a single Associate Dean for Academic Advising with physical offices on each campus, each overseen by Assistant Deans and staffed with professional advisors who will support and advise students throughout their undergraduate career in close contact with departments, programs, and other areas at Fordham.

In its ideal state, the Center will be structured internally into two sections: one serving the unique needs of first-year, sophomore, and transfer students (each advisor in this section will have a caseload of about 200+ students); the other meeting the very different needs of juniors and seniors (each advisor in this section will have a caseload of about 300 students).

In the first phase, planned for academic year 2022-2023, a newly hired cohort of academic advisors will support the academic transition and progress of all students in the Class of 2026; subsequent phases will expand advising support to all undergraduate students in the colleges. The Associate Dean will provide leadership for the establishment of the center, including developing core values and mission, and will work closely with the academic deans on implementation of the new model.

Essential Functions

  • Leads the process of developing a vision and mission statement for the Fordham College Academic Advising Center. Develops resource and training guidelines and works collaboratively with the academic deans and others to build a infrastructure that promotes regular reflection, assessment, and growth for advisors.
  • Organizes hiring, onboarding, and supervision of advising center leadership and professional advisors; works closely with the college deans to build collaborations with existing personnel.
  • Establishes strong relationships with leadership of special programs on campus that guide students, such as HEOP, CSTEP, Dance, Theater, and the two honors programs, to build synergies between these areas and the advising center.
  • Creates, revises, and implements processes to facilitate advising as well as regularly reviewing and evaluating processes in concert with Academic Records and IT, and with other leadership within the advising center,
  • Initiates and supports collaboration with faculty regarding student academic success.
  • Contributes to the effectiveness of academic advising and student support through team-based work with advising staff at the Gabelli School of Business, the School for Professional and Continuing Studies, and other academic areas.
  • Leads coordination with key areas on campus, including Student Affairs, Counseling and
  • Psychological Services, and Campus Ministry, in identifying and supporting at-risk students.
  • Develops and maintains close relationships with administrative offices throughout the university such as Admissions, Career Services, and the Office of Prestigious Fellowships.
  • Leads the integration of data analysis and robust communication of findings into the regular work of academic advising.
  • Develops and implements a communications strategy focused on helping students understand the value of academic advising resources.
  • Oversees ongoing assessment of advising practices and outcomes.
  • Organizes regular professional development activities for all advisors and shares best practices/literature on topics such as DEI, student success, and retention, especially in the context of a private, highly residential college.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s or Doctoral degree in education, counseling, or a related field.
  • 7-10 years of experience with academic advising in higher education with progressive responsibilities. 5+ years supervisory experience, preferably leading complex teams.
  • Demonstrated experience leading large-scale initiatives, including supervising individuals and large teams in a complex setting.
  • Familiarity with change management and guiding supervisors through comprehensive organizational change.
  • Experience with data-driven approaches to strengthening retention and graduation rates, as well as outcome assessment.
  • Demonstrated experience integrating best practices in academic advising and the scholarship of advising into practice.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Proven ability to juggle multiple responsibilities, organize, prioritize, and work collaboratively.
  • Proficiency in various software tools such as Microsoft Office Suite and G-Suite.
  • Experience with Banner, Salesforce, and web management systems a plus.
