West Virginia University Roads and Groundsis currently accepting applications for aTrades Specialist II Lead.Under the supervision of the Operations Manager, the Lead will provide leadership, training, and technical support for a specific crew of Landscape Construction and Campus Service Workers (typically 8-10 employees) while completing assigned landscape construction projects, maintenance, and snow removal duties. Oversees work progress to meet deadlines. Coordinate equipment requirements and repairs with project schedules. Shall fill in for Operations Manager as required

SHIFT- 7am to 3pm

What you'll do:

  • Functionas a team leader, providing guidance to Landscape Construction Workers, Landscape Workers, journeymen, trades workers, and any other support personnel as required. Followprocedures and makes work assignments to those individuals assigned to the crew to ensure work is completed in a timely fashion ensuring proper quality and quantity. Inspects complete work assignments of journeymen craft workers, trades workers, and helpers to ensure quality control. Ensurethat proper safety procedures are used while performing job duties.
  • Receivework orders. Interfacewith Work Control, Supervisor, Managers, and requesting party to finalize project needs and scope. Assistsupervisor with multi-craft projects related to overall work assignments. Communicatework schedules and goals to employees and customer, creating efficiency and a timely completion of assigned tasks.
  • Providecontinual inspection of assigned area to ensure maintenance is completed on schedule; recommends to the Supervisor major repair needs; assistSupervisor in updating deferred maintenance.
  • Individual will have responsibility to read and review prints on new and existing building projects for repair or construction associated with specific job duties and expertise. Individual will also develop as-built sketches of completed projects.
  • Individual will maintain knowledge of state, federal, and local codes and requirements pertaining to maintenance and construction. Individual will attend project meetings and interact with contractors, vendors, and engineers as needed.
  • Determineand recommendto the Supervisor the needs of the project in regard to crew size, types of crafts, material availability, equipment, paperwork, safety checks to maintain proper work and material flow in order to maintain schedule.
  • Providedaily reports on actual progress versus projected progress to supervisor. Maintainthe original scope of the project to ensure project cost control. Informsupervisor of needed discipline and performance problems. Ensurethat work group processes all work requests, material requisitions, weekly reports, and invoices necessary to complete assignments according to Facilities Management operation.
  • Complete detailed cost estimates and drawings. Assist supervisor in disciplinary action.
  • May fill in for supervisor. Inventory individual assigned work tools of crews. Assists in interviewing of candidates. Assists in the detailed design of projects. Must be able to respond when called during off hours to cover emergency situations.
  • Shall operate equipment such as payloaders, backhoes, road grader, forklift, crane trucks, large dump trucks, sanitation vehicles, landscape equipment, skid loaders, asphalt paver, and roller. Operatetractors, lawn maintenance equipment, power tools needed to perform landscape construction and maintenance.
  • Install, construct, and maintainlandscape structures while using materials such as concrete, bituminous concrete, flag stone, field stone, sculptured stone, brick, blocks, pavers, retaining wall blocks, and landscape timbers.
  • Applysealers, anti-spalling compounds, adhesives, etc. in performing the normal duties. This includes the finishing of concrete.
  • Performlandscaping tasks including the planting of trees, ornamental shrubs. Seed, slicelawns, aerate, fertilizeand applysoil amendments using tractors and power equipment. Followverbal or written instructions and interpretblueprints that pertain to landscape construction.
  • Removesnow from sidewalks, steps, roads, and parking lots by means of trucks, tractors, power brooms, and hand tools.
  • Must be able to respond to emergency situations on all occasions and must be available for telephone contact during all emergency and unsafe environmental conditions.
  • Performminor repairs on all equipment as needed. Completeservice and maintenance on equipment and trucks such as greasing, oil changes, etc. Assistthe mechanics with major repairs.
  • Maintaincleanliness of assigned areas by mechanical or hand methods.
  • Fabricateparts and performrepairs on grounds equipment using torches, welders, lathes, drill presses, and other shop equipment as required.
  • Assistin the upkeep of maintenance records for trucks and grounds equipment.
  • Assistshop Mechanic Lead in equipment preparation for seasonal change overs.


High School diploma or GED equivalency. Vocational or technical training of up to 18 months beyond high school in masonry, carpentry, and mechanics is required or equivalentrelated work experience.

At least 2 years experience in generalcConstruction

At least 6 months experience in each of the below:

  • Heavy equipment operation
  • Heavy equipment maintenance
  • Supervisory or Leadership experience
  • Asphalt/Masonry/Carpentry
  • Ability to read, write, and perform simple mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate heavy construction equipment, grounds maintenance equipment, and large trucks.
  • Ability to lift, bend, stoop, walk, reach, and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to operate equipment over rough terrain for long periods of time.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret drawings, blue prints, specifications, and related regulatory codes and requirements.
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring frequent and prolonged exposure to dust, fumes, chemicals, moving parts, noise, and/or extreme outdoor weather conditions or extreme variations of indoor temperatures.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle and equipment with a standard transmission.
  • Ability to construct wooden structures or forms needed in the construction of concrete structures.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain proper attendance and punctuality standards.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Demonstrated ability to construct professional masonry structures.
  • Demonstrated ability to finish concrete, construct brick and concrete block structures.
  • Demonstrated ability to short grade with transit.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform skilled landscape tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead work groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate all types of grounds equipment.
  • Ability to read blueprints.


Must have a valid Class-A Commercial Driver's License.

Preferred Tanker Endorsement.


  • Be able to work in rain, snow, heat, cold, wind and under a high level of noise and extreme stress.
  • Physical exertion by lifting, walking, working on feet for extended periods, climbing, stooping, and bending.
  • Be able to perform manual labor and tolerate dust.
  • Ability to perform heavy lifting, bending, walking, standing, carrying, and climbing stairs.

As needed:

  • Perform digging.
  • Able to operate equipment on rough, steep terrain for long periods of time.
