Included in the plan is a goal of transitioning to NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletics. 

The Assistant Athletic Trainer reports to the Head Athletic Trainer and is responsible for the care, prevention, and rehabilitation of injuries and/or illnesses to Augustana University Student-Athletes. This position will be responsible for providing healthcare to student-athletes to include the prevention, evaluation, treatment, management, and rehabilitation of student-athletes’ injuries and illnesses under the supervision of Head Athletic Trainer. The primary sports this position will cover is Men’s Basketball, Men’s and Women’s Track, and Men’s & Women’s Golf. Beginning 2023-2024 academic year, this lead Athletic Trainer duties will change from Men’s & Women’s Track to Women’s Lacrosse.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead Athletic Trainer for the Men’s Basketball, Men’s and Women’s Track teams (beginning 2023-2024, this positions Lead Athletic Training duties will change from Men’s and Women’s Track to Women’s Lacrosse)
  • Administrative Duties
    • Coordinator of Concussion Testing Program (Baseline testing for new student-athletes)
    • Drug Testing Coordinator (NCAA post-season testing)
    • Summer new student-athlete’s medical eligibility (Injury Zone) Men’s Basketball, Men’s and Women’s Track…beginning 2023-2024 lead athletic training duties will change from Men’s and Women’s Track to Women’s Lacrosse.
  • Coordinator of Concussion Testing program
  • Serve as Drug Testing Coordinator with NCAA post-season events
  • Coordinate team physician Monday Augie Clinic for student-athletes
  • Clinical Preceptor to assigned Athletic Training students to include the following-
  • Academic Duties
    • Clinical Preceptor to AT students assigned to their rotation (Level 1 – 2)
    • Clinical Preceptor to AT students Level 3 Immersion Internship
    • End of semester Clinical Evaluations for AT students supervised (A-Track)
  • Clinical Duties
    • Fall Camp (August) assist with Football
    • Athletic Training Room coverage (4-6 pm) September – October 15
    • Lead Athletic Trainer for Men’s Basketball (Oct. 15 – March)
    • Home and Away event coverage – travel required
    • Lead Athletic Trainer for Men’s and Women’s Track – no travel required
    • Assist with home event coverage as determined by Head Athletic Trainer (fall / spring)
    • Lead Athletic Trainer for Men’s and Women’s Golf (point of contact) – no event coverage required
    • Coordinate medical referrals to team physicians
  • Effectively communicate and work in conjunction with Team Physicians and Athletic Training Staff on treatment and implementing rehabilitation protocols for injured athletes as well as ensure that equipment is properly used and student-athletes are properly using the athletic training facilities.
  • This position will maintain medical records on student-athletes including physicals, insurance information, medical evaluation and rehabilitation reports, and medical referrals.
  • Attend workouts when applicable, also attend practice and game events including travel as assigned with teams and collaborate with the Head Athletic Trainer.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate with coaches regarding injured student athletes and medical policies and procedures and follow the NATA code of ethics, attend annual CEU courses and remain current with all national and state certifications and licensure.
  • Required to comply with University, NSIC and NCAA rules and regulations, supervise and educate graduate and undergraduate student athletic trainers
  • Complete all other duties assigned by the Head Athletic Trainer.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Board of Certification (BOC) required for national licensure as a certified athletic trainer.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree Preferred
  • Prior experience as a certified athletic trainer, with a preference of work experience at the college/university level.
  • Member in good standing with the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA).
  • South Dakota state licensure required through the SD Board of Medical Examiners (SDBOME).
