Job Summary

The part-time virtual reference librarian will report to the Director of the Law Library. They will be responsible for holding daily virtual reference hours, including some evening and weekend coverage based on demand. They will provide reference and in-depth research services in consultation with full-time reference librarians, and will develop and maintain instructional tools in a variety of formats. They will support the development of the University's institutional repository, and will assist with other projects as assigned.

Scope

The Ohio Northern University Jay P. Taggart Law Library is seeking a part-time virtual reference librarian. This position will provide legal research services to law students, faculty, and community members remotely. The successful candidate will be a skilled researcher who is able to work cooperatively with a small team. The candidate should also have strong written and oral communication skills as well as a customer service-oriented attitude. Students currently enrolled in a JD or library science program are encouraged to apply.

Principal Responsibilities
  • Hold daily virtual reference hours
  • Provide reference and in-depth research services
  • Create, improve, and maintain library research guides
  • Develop online instruction tools, including instructional videos and virtual workshops
  • Upload and maintain law school content on the University's institutional repository, DigitalCommons@ONU
  • Provide support on other projects as assigned
Required Skills
  • Familiarity with online conferencing platforms such as Zoom or Google Meet
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including a demonstrated ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing
  • Knowledge of legal terminology and research methods
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Coursework in a JD and/or library science program required
Preferred Qualifications
  • Coursework in legal bibliography, legal research, and/or law librarianship preferred
