Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor's degree, preferably majoring in communication, public relations, or business.

Knowledge and skills required:
  • Proven self-motivation.
  • Ability to develop and execute strategic plans without daily supervision.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • A willingness to implement new ideas/methods in alumni chapter programs and student outreach.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including experience in public speaking
  • Ability to establish, maintain, and model effective professional relationships with alumni, students, and campus representatives.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Creativity, continual energy, flexibility, and ability to deal with multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Experience in problem-solving and motivating others.
  • Expertise in Google and Microsoft Office products and internet technologies.
  • Experience with event planning and/or conference coordination with the ability to focus on multiple small details as well as big picture strategy.
  • A valid driver's license.
  • A willingness to work evenings and weekends with the ability to travel independently both in and out of state.
  • Ability to represent the Alumni Association and Appalachian State University in a positive manner to all constituents.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Three to five years' experience in events planning, volunteer management, public relations, and marketing.
  • Experience in a university setting is preferred.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Office of Alumni Affairs seeks an Associate Director to coordinate the unit's management of the campus partnerships to strengthen alumni engagement. The Associate Director reports to the Executive Director of Alumni Affairs and is a colleague within the Division of University Advancement.
  • Recruit, manage, and train regional volunteers for meaningful and purposeful involvement in the Alumni Association and related university initiatives.
  • Work with volunteers to plan and implement regional events and develop new and engaging outreach techniques.
  • Assist alumni chapters in event planning and logistics, chapter budget management, communication outreach, philanthropic efforts, and coordinating existing alumni chapter and network scholarship programs.
  • Oversee and expand the Alumni Association's current student outreach, focusing on the website, social media, special events, educational programming, and alumni networking opportunities.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director of Annual Giving on the engagement of the Seniors participating in the Senior Class Gift and initiatives related to fundraising and special events focused on connections with the Appalachian Alumni Association (Senior Class Gift, #iBackAPP Day, etc.).
  • Serve as staff liaison for the Alumni Council Engagement & Program Committee.
  • Manage and oversee the coordination of Alumni Association's away football tailgates and other special events.
  • Work with alumni, faculty, staff, and students to further the mission of the Alumni Association.
  • Maintain oversight of the budget functions of the Alumni Chapter program, Alumni Network program, and Appalachian Student Ambassadors.
  • Supervise the Assistant Director of Alumni Affairs position and oversee efforts of current student outreach, young alumni programming, away-game tailgates, and other alumni special events.

Physical Demands of Position

The range of physical demands for this position is broad. The position requires desk work and also time on the feet to assist at events; standing on your feet in a constant fast-paced environment for 8 hours a day and sometimes longer. The position also requires light to medium lifting (up to 30 pounds) related to event management and daily office duties.
