University Housing at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is accepting applications for the position of the Residence Hall Director for Graduate Upper Division Halls. Responsible for the leadership, management, and coordination of a residential community in the graduate upper division residence halls. Work collaboratively with colleagues on campus to support the University Housing mission and vision, build safe, inclusive communities through leadership, supervision, crisis management, and programming.

Primary Position Function/Summary:

Responsible for the leadership, management, and coordination of a residential community in the graduate upper division residence halls. Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Community Development and Leadership Responsibilities (25%)

  • Provide direct leadership to staff for community assessment, community building and programming.
  • Provide guidance and support to staff, residents, and student groups in developing and maintaining communities which complement the academic mission of the university, engage the residents' interest and expand their knowledge, and increase residents' social awareness and sense of responsibility.
  • Assume a leadership role in the graduate upper division halls community through promoting education and advocacy for multiculturalism and social justice.
  • Coordinate collaboration and work between Resident Advisors and other paraprofessional positions, such as Graduate Assistants, Program Advisors, and/or Community Aides, to provide programs to residents.
  • Provide leadership development opportunities for members of student groups through structured advising, mentoring, and community event planning.
  • Train staff and residents in community assessment and community building, program planning, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Educate residents and staff regarding the University and Housing policies and developmentally addresses behaviors informally through conflict resolution strategies and the judicial process.
  • Maintain appropriate community standards within the graduate upper division halls.
  • Act as a University judicial hearing officer for all hall-level violations and apartment-level violations utilizing an educational and developmental approach.
  • Develop intentional collaborative relationships with staff in other University Housing departments.
  • Develop collaborative relationships with staff and faculty in Student Affairs and Academic Affairs.
  • Supervise twelve resident advisors and student support staff in conduction Complex Director for Graduate and Upper Division Residence Halls.

Staff Supervision, Recruitment, Training, and Development Responsibilities (25%)

  • Supervises and leads 14 paraprofessional staff in the implementation of the Illinois Residential Curriculum.
  • Participate in the planning, coordination, and structure of the recruitment and selection processes of the area paraprofessional and professional staff.
  • Lead the planning, coordination, and structure of the training and development of area paraprofessional staff.
  • Assist with departmental training, plan and implement summer area paraprofessional training, and develop and implement weekly staff development for the area staff.
  • Participate in professional staff training and development programs.
  • Conduct informal and formal performance appraisals for paraprofessional staff.
  • Engage in and implement University Housings diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.

Administrative Responsibilities (15%)

  • Establish and maintain weekday drop-in office hours for residents, minimum 10 hours, as part of a flexible, approximately 40-hour work schedule during the academic year.
  • Maintain a standard 40-hour work week schedule during the summer and breaks to work on assigned projects or prepare for staff training.
  • Coordinate technology-orientated communication through social media, e-newsletters, including writing, design, and presentations for the Graduate Upper Division Halls and various stakeholders.
  • Be available for evening and weekend programs, contact with students, and response to emergencies.
  • Coordinate various administrative tasks, such as the room change process, hall damage investigations, and student employment records.
  • Participate on a wide variety of departmental and/or university committees, project teams, and work groups.
  • Maintain accurate documentation for the judicial process.
  • Coordinate multi-hall opening and closing procedures at various break periods.
  • Process requests for funding and administer student group and staff administrative budgets including maintain detailed financial records.
  • Lead conduct/participate in weekly area staff meetings and training sessions. These meeting may include evening/night hours.
  • Maintain knowledge of current policy and procedures for the unit and department.
  • Participate actively in area professional staff meetings and regularly scheduled area team meetings.
  • Collaborate regularly with other Housing units on various programs and operations.
  • Complete summer assignments such as closely working with the Housing Information Office and Conference Services, including supervision and leadership of the area summer paraprofessional staff.

Crisis Response & Management Responsibilities (25%)

  • Assume on-call responsibilities within a multi-residence hall and multi-apartments areas on a regularly scheduled year-round rotation, which may include holiday.
  • Responds to in-hall emergencies including but not limited to weather, fire, outside emergency responders enter building.
  • Effectively addresses and responds to crisis or emergency situations which includes providing guidance to paraprofessional staff and students. Provides appropriate postcrisis referrals and follow-up with students and staff.
  • Remains at or reports to their facilities as soon as conditions reasonably permit in the event of severe weather or emergency situations when the university may suspend classes or close the university. (This position is considered an essential employee.)

Professional Responsibilities (10%)

  • Function in a unique department-centered and area-centered environment where in-depth collaboration and teamwork are extremely important and highly valued.
  • Maintain an effective working relationship with supervisor, co-workers and University Housing staff.
  • Fulfill expectations for assigned committees and projects, and other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements and Qualifications:


Required: Master's Degree. Candidates with a Master's degree in progress at the time of application may be considered and an applicant will have to completed a Master's degree at the time of employment.

Preferred: Master's degree in College Student Personnel, Student Affairs, Higher Education, Counseling or related field.


Required: Part-time work experience in residential life, conference services, and campus housing environment, student affairs or related field (higher education, counseling, diversity education, social work, etc.). Graduate assistantships are considered part-time work.

Preferred: Preference is current full-time work in residential life, university housing or conference service, supervisory skills, successful community building strategies, conflict mediation skills, interpersonal skills, residential curriculum experience, sound decision-making, and evaluation skills

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Required: Ability to demonstrate quality decision making and evaluative skills, including taking responsibility for actions and decisions. Excellent oral and written communication.Preferred knowledge, skills and abilities: A working knowledge of student learning and student development, social justice education, and/or Residential Curriculum. Demonstrated openness to constructive feedback and the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and student while working successfully with diverse college student populations.

Environmental Demands:

Must be able to access residence halls, community space and office locations. Light lifting may be required. The physical requirements are for an ordinary administrative position. Work will involve stressful situations such as resolving conflicts and problem situations with residents, and may require evening and weekend hours.This is a live-in residential, full-time, 12-month Academic Professional appointment. Position require Resident Director to live on campus. University benefits package, on-site apartment and salary commensurate with experience.

Benefits and Salary: This is a full-time, 12-month benefitseligible Academic Professional position appointed on a 12-month basis with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2022.. This position will require residency on site. The succesful applicant will be offered a two-bedroom furnshed apartment with laundry facilities, and access to University Housing dining halls when available, and an annual salary of $45,000.00.
