Strategic Data Analyst, Office of the Provost

The Strategic Data Analyst will play a pivotal role in the Office of the Provost by providing professional data analysis, reporting and interpretation, data visualization, systems support and project management to multiple stakeholders. This role will deliver concise, empirically precise, and compelling work, collaborating with other members of our team to generate, use and interpret data and information for effective decision-making and planning in higher education.

The Strategic Data Analyst is part of the Office of the Provost and is a key contributor to the operational and strategic excellence of the office. Reporting directly to the Provost’s Chief of Staff, the Strategic Data Analyst will work closely with the Director of Projects in the Office of the Provost to support the data, design and strategic planning needs of the Provost and her team.

The Office of the Provost at Vanderbilt University is responsible for the business and management operations that support the work of the Provost in overseeing all faculty, staff, programs, and initiatives for Vanderbilt’s 10 schools and colleges, as well as leading the university’s research, admissions, student affairs and residential life. Each team member plays an integral role in executing strategic initiatives and outreach that drive the university forward. The team works alongside the Provost and Vice Provosts in the academic planning and operations of Vanderbilt University and its affiliates, including the Vanderbilt University Medical Center. 

Duties and Responsibilities
The Strategic Data Analyst brings the analytical skills needed to partner on a range of high-impact initiatives for the Office of the Provost, including data analysis, write-up, and interpretation; strategic planning; process design; and project management. They are data-driven, able to manage ambiguity with comfort and eager to support leadership on a variety of projects that will be critical to the success of the Office of the Provost.

  • Drive operational excellence in the analysis, reporting, and interpretation of data and information. Drive innovation in the use of research in strategic planning and decision-making in higher education.
  • Collect, utilize, interpret, and analyze data and information for the development and execution of strategic initiatives, project management and communication. Place analyses in the context of findings in fields of higher education research and education finance, more broadly. Evaluate the quality and reliability of data and information.
  • Track and maintain office or program data, metrics and outcomes and assess impact to ensure achievement of goals.
  • Mine data from primary and secondary sources and reorganize in a format that can be easily read and understood by a wide variety of users and audiences.
  • Prepare reports, presentations, written documents, and other materials for executive leadership that effectively and aesthetically communicate results/findings, trends, patterns, and predictions using relevant data and research.
  • Conduct market research and focus group analyses to supplement quantitative analyses.
  • Test, evaluate and implement new or upgraded software; assist with training office users on tools.
  • Foster collaboration between team members, both internal and external to the office.
  • Support, coordinate or manage strategic initiatives and projects for the Office of the Provost to ensure successful outcomes.
  • Help develop and support existing project and change management processes.
  • Provide professional and technical support or management in the execution of day-to-day project activities and special projects, as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education is required.
  • Ph.D. in fields of economics, sociology, education, or related social science field; or advanced degree in related, quantitatively oriented field (e.g., master’s degree in education, public policy, data science) is preferred.
  • At least 2 years of directly comparable experience is necessary.
  • Ability to generate and present data insights using statistical software and data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau or similar) is necessary.
  • Proficiency in graphic design is preferred.
  • Experience in management consulting or strategy and operations in a fast-paced setting is preferred.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft PowerPoint are necessary.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze and disseminate varying amounts of information with accuracy and attention to detail are necessary.
  • Experience working with quantitative information and data is necessary; this may be demonstrated by academic or professional experience.
    • Experience with quantitative data analysis software and business intelligence tools (e.g., Excel, Oracle, Tableau) is necessary.
    • Ability to access, store, clean, manipulate, transform and merge datasets is necessary.
    • The ability to do descriptive and predictive statistical analysis is necessary.
    • Training in and experience with more advanced statistical techniques is preferred.
  • The ability to understand and translate quantitative data for a wide variety of audiences is necessary.
  • Experience providing data support, training, and presentation to a variety of internal and external audiences is necessary.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with individuals across the university and externally is necessary.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills is necessary.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills are necessary.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle high-level sensitive and confidential information is necessary.
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills are necessary.
  • Strong time-management skills and ability to multi-task and meet deadlines are necessary.
  • Demonstrated experience managing projects through to completion is necessary.
