Position Highlights

The University of Arizona's College of Agriculture & Life Sciences (CALS) is seeking enthusiastic candidates for multiple Academic Advisor I level positions in the Office of Career and Academic Services (CAS). CALS offers over 20 distinct undergraduate majors across ten academic units so effective and engaging communication regarding the breadth of college offerings and possible career paths is essential to the position. The primary purpose of these positions is to provide quality academic advising, mentoring and support services to students. Advisors will be assigned to students declared in either Plant Sciences; Sustainable Plant Systems, Applied Biotechnology, Entomology and/or seeking major exploration. The advisor will work cross-functionally with the departments to support student experiences. The advisors will also assist with college wide programs and services. This includes developmental and strengths-based learning strategies. Advisors play a key role as a team player in the delivery of the following retention strategies: student success courses for CALS incoming students and those with academic eligibility statuses; new student orientations; student events; recruitment; and outreach activities. The advisors will work in close collaboration with faculty and staff in multiple CALS units inclusive of Career and Academic Services. Key components to the position include: working in teams, also independently; open and clear communication; taking initiative; and adaptability to change. The academic advisors will actively participate in the curriculum committee for the discipline they advise in and will collaborate with the respective curriculum chair. Advisors will also provide backup advising support to other CALS majors as needed. The successful candidate will work in a fast-paced environment and must consistently demonstrate creativity, flexibility, initiative and effective teamwork. The position will report to the CALS Senior Director of Advising and Student Services and will work collaboratively with the respective departments, CALS academic advisors and CAS staff.

Duties & Responsibilities

Academic Advisors serve
as frontline contact for undergraduate students for developmental academic
advising to drive engagement and empower students to achieve their academic and
career goals. Plays a vital role in maximizing undergraduate student retention.
Builds formative relationships with students by interpreting information and
providing clarification on procedures and academic requirements of specific
programs or majors. Academic Advisors have authority to approve students'
academic degree programs, including evaluating transfer credit and making
exceptions to the program requirements under the auspices of their respective
faculty. Maintains extensive industry and institutional knowledge and expertise
in interpreting and improving advising practices. In
addition, Advisors play a vital role in maximizing undergraduate retention and
degree completion.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assess individual students' stage of development (academic and career) and promotes their growth by determining suitable developmental tasks
  • Advise students on matters ranging from developing academic plans to academic policy, career options and student engagement opportunities.
  • Refer students to appropriate departmental offices, faculty, and support services for help with academic, personal, and career counseling, academic skills development, and financial aid support.
  • Evaluate use of transfer credit and determine whether or not degree requirements have been met
  • Support students in establishing realistic and attainable academic and career goals
  • Assist undergraduate students in determining educational plans, choosing courses, and exploring majors, minors, and career options
  • Identify educational and career options appropriate for each student and assist student with evaluating each option, including possible outcomes and their implications
  • Counsel students on options to satisfy degree requirements
  • Monitor students' academic progress, determine satisfactory progress toward degree, and assist students in completion
  • Identify current and potential needs or problem areas (ex. Study skills, tutoring)
  • Advise students with academic difficulty on development of an academic action plan, and refer students to appropriate campus resources for assistance as needed
  • Using University systems, maintain student files, records, and advisor's notes
  • Maintain knowledge of regulations and policies that impact students' educational options

Academic
Advising
- Direct contact with students through advising appointments,
drop-ins, phone and email. Lead advisor for students declared in majors, minors
and potential certificates affiliated with units from Plant Sciences,
Sustainable Plant Systems, Applied Biotechnology, and Entomology. Assist
college general advisors with major exploration for students interested in
disciplines offered in CALS, and also advise students with academic eligibility
statuses. Provide backup advising support to other CALS majors as needed.

Student Support and Instruction - Teach
CALS success courses for new students, students with an academic eligibility
status and/or to specific populations based on academic discipline. Will assist
as a team player on the course content and delivery of the class. Will be
available to students outside of class to discuss support strategies. Work with
peer mentors that assist with CALS success courses. Assist and support retention
programs that include mentorship; programming for first generation students and
supporters; career and major exploration; and others that may be implemented
within the college.

Academic Support - Respective unit and
major exploration advising tasks including data analysis, targeted advising
communications for students, development of department student orientation
materials, tracking alumni, student award nominations and management of
department website student content. Actively participate with curriculum
committee and assist with submission of annual curricular updates.

Service and Professional Development -
Active in academic advising communities on campus, as well as national
professional organizations for academic advisors. Attend college and
departmental committees as representative and advocate of respective unit
academic advisor.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a field related to area of assignment AND one year of academic advising experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience, training, and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree (completed or in progress)
  • Experience with technology
  • Experience working collaboratively with others
  • Knowledge of and successful experience in providing academic advising or in teaching/counseling in higher education
