The Chief of Staff position at the Texas McCombs School of Business (MSB) is a key contributor and facilitator responsible for prioritizing, supporting, and managing complex projects, initiatives, and workstreams that have a school-wide and/or university-wide impact. This position reports to the Dean of the MSB and interacts with MSB and University leaders in providing strategic and operational excellence for the Office of the Dean. The Chief of Staff supervises administrative support staff, maintains a professional presence, and coordinates the activities of the Dean with internal and external constituencies of the School. The position requires leadership acumen, both strategic and influential, unwavering commitment to excellence, situational awareness, creativity, and indefatigability in delivering and championing ideas, individuals, teams, work products, and any other Office of the Dean initiatives. The Chief of Staff will report directly to the Dean of the McCombs School of Business and the Office of the Dean is led by Dean Lillian F. Mills with a leadership team and executive committee of various Associate and Assistant Deans and Directors.


Project Management and Strategic Initiatives

  • Support MSB initiatives identified by the Dean.

  • Drive the development of project plans, timelines and goals; track and communicate key performance indicators (KPIs) for the strategic plan.

  • Identify poorly defined research or strategy questions and independently develop a structured perspective. Recommend solutions and solve problems.

  • Build effective and collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Assist the Dean with identifying and engaging new entrants to Texas who provide strategic opportunities for MSB brand enhancement.

  • Provide written, presentation, and oral updates to stakeholders as needed.

  • Manage relationships with external consultants to assure timely fulfillment.

  • Support internal and strategic communication in partnership with the Dean

  • Coordinate with Communications and Development staff to ensure Dean preparedness and maximum impact for internal and external presentations, including crisis communications.

  • Continuously learn context about MSB and Dean's priorities (“what would Dean Mills say?”)

  • Other special projects to assist the Senior Associate Deans as assigned by Dean.

Administrative and Business Responsibilities

  • Serve as a member of the Dean’s senior leadership and strategic planning team.

  • Lead the Office of the Dean, including long-range schedule planning; establishing cadence and priority of Dean’s time in and out of the office for meetings with key stakeholders. Assist the Dean with executive-level search endeavors, when necessary, and facilitate onboarding processes for senior leaders who will report directly to the Dean.

  • Manage and/or staff ad hoc and exploratory committees established by the Dean.

  • Manage the Dean’s commitments to key University and external priorities and initiatives.

  • Handle special projects on the Dean’s behalf.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree and at least ten years of relevant professional experience is preferred.

  • Broad and deep experience in the administrative functions and services of a complex organization with highly diverse stakeholders.

  • Ability to represent the Dean and the Office of the Dean in meetings with high-level individuals from all walks of life.

  • Personal style that highlights confidence, credibility and professional maturity. Previous success developing collaborative relationships with multiple stakeholder constituencies and diverse populations.

  • Excellent project management skills with ability to manage multiple high-impact projects simultaneously. Ability to track and maintain multiple short and long-term deadlines.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills that are clear, succinct and effectively convey the Dean’s voice orally and in writing.

  • High proficiency with Microsoft Office applications. Life-long learner who expands and deepens skill sets, proactively undergoing training.

  • Previous success navigating change, dealing with ambiguity, and leading from the front.

  • Honest with the highest integrity. Flexible and open-minded, yet able to take a stand when necessary and navigate difficult conversations/settings.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications
  • MBA or related Master's degree

  • Previous experience in higher education and/or a business school.

  • Ability to work in, appreciate, and understand the priorities of a research-oriented academic community.

  • A service-oriented approach towards our School of Business community members, including faculty, students, administrators, staff, guests, and alumni.

  • Previous success managing full-time staff

Salary Range
  • $110,000 + depending on qualifications

Working Conditions
  • Evening and weekend hours may be required during peak periods and for special events.

  • Work in standard office conditions with repetitive use of keyboard at workstation.

Employment Eligibility:

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
