Position Highlights

The Education and Outreach Manager is responsible for the oversight of all outreach and educational programming for youth and general audiences at Flandrau Science Center & Planetarium. Responsibilities include developing and delivering K-12 and other youth field trip experiences, youth camps, and community outreach activities and content. This role works closely with the Flandrau team, University of Arizona faculty and staff, and community partners to deliver high quality, innovative, and sustainable programs for the community.

The Education and Outreach Manager oversees all youth educational programs. This position is responsible for the development, coordination, scheduling, and oversight of high-quality K-12 programs that align with Arizona State Standards. Fostering relationships with local schools and educators is a priority for this role.

This position is responsible for the coordination and delivery of outreach events at Flandrau and off-site locations for family and general audiences. Working closely with the Flandrau team, University staff, faculty and students, and community partners, to plan events and coordinate programming.

Flandrau holds six weeks of Fusion Camps during the summer, hosting approximately 90 children (1st-6th grade). Additional Fusion camps are held throughout the year. This position is responsible for the coordination and supervision of all aspects of Fusion Camps, included camper safety, curriculum development, staff hiring/supervision, camper registration, daily operations, evaluation, and budget.

The Education and Outreach Manager supervises student staff. Responsibilities include hiring, training, evaluation of competencies, scheduling, and support of staff needs.

Duties & Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop, coordinate, and supervise educational content and programming for K-12 and other youth audiences, ensuring K-12 content aligns with Arizona State Standards.
  • Oversee scheduling of K-12 and other group visits.
  • Evaluate programming and implement changes as needed to ensure highest level of quality.
  • Plan, organize, and deliver outreach events at Flandrau and at off-site locations for family and general audiences.
  • Collaborate with University staff, faculty and students, and community partners to develop content and programming for outreach events.
  • Plan and direct the delivery of Fusion camps, including the hiring and supervision of staff.
  • Develop curriculum for Fusion Camps.
  • Ensure University policies for working with minors are followed to ensure safety of campers and other minors.
  • Create budgets for all education and outreach programs and work within defined budgets.
  • Collaborate with University faculty to participate in EPO components of research grants.
  • Ensure a consistent, high-quality experience for visitors by providing and modeling quality customer service.
  • Create content and curriculum for floor demonstrations and train staff on the delivery of demos, including assessment of competency based on content knowledge and skill in delivery.
  • Complete daily opening and closing procedures.
  • Collaborate with communications staff to ensure proper marketing of events and programs.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Ability to skillfully utilize talents of supervised personnel to deliver excellent customer service and programming.
  • Ability to participate in various work teams to improve the science center and enhance the programming offered and the visitor experience.
  • Ability to develop work plans and identify, secure, and manage resources from traditional and non-traditional sources.
  • Knowledge of database management, word processing, Internet navigation, and e-mail systems.
  • Ability to develop and implement long- and short-term goals and objectives.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart information to a range of clientele, peers, and staff and answer inquiries from a variety of sources.
  • Knowledge of and ability to enforce compliance with policies and procedures in accordance with science center policies, University policies, and industry best practices.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in education or science and a minimum of 3 years of related work experience or equivalent combination of education and work experience required.
  • Experience working with children in large group settings.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Experience planning or coordinating events.
  • Experience working and communicating with diverse audiences.
  • Customer service experience.
  • Experience developing content for educational or outreach programs.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office and Google suite.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with children in K-12 classroom settings.
  • Experience directing youth camp programs.
  • Curriculum development experience.
  • Experience with grant writing.
  • Experience working in a science center, planetarium, or museum environment.
  • Experience building relationships with K-12 schools and educators.
  • Experience with CMS (Content Management Systems) software.
