Position Highlights

Come join the University of Arizona College of Veterinary Medicine as the Associate Dean for Clinical Relations. We are seeking an innovative leader that is passionate about advancing DVM student clinical learning in a workplace-based model.

The Associate Dean for Clinical Relations leads the team that is dedicated to creating an inclusive learning environment during the clinical phase of education in the DVM program, ensuring that all students reach their educational, career, and personal goals. The Associate Dean serves as the lead advocate for students during their clinical year education. As a member of the College Executive Team, the Associate Dean will provide leadership in the development, implementation and continuous evaluation of work-place based clinical veterinary education. The Associate Dean for Clinical Relations reports to the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Programs and Faculty Affairs, and under their direction, will ensure that the clinical year curriculum is coordinated with the pre-clinical DVM curriculum, and that it meets all requirements of the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education requirements, as well complying with University of Arizona policies and procedures. A critical role of the position is to develop and maintain relationships with clinical affiliates and preceptor veterinarians that provide the clinical resources for student learning.

The Associate Dean will work closely with the Associate Dean of Student Affairs to coordinate student services support as well as policy development and implementation. They will also deeply engage with the Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion to provide a learning environment that demonstrates inclusive excellence.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Serves as a member of the Dean's leadership team; in that role assist in the development of the College mission, vision and values. Serve as an exemplar and champion for advancement of the College in alignment with our values.
  • Serves as an advocate for student learning in the clinical year.
    Responsible for the development and oversight of the work-place based (distributed) clinical education model for DVM students.
  • Development, oversight, and maintenance of clinical relationships with external partners to enable DVM students to be day one ready for the career of their choice.
  • Supervision of the Clinical Relations & Outreach team. Evaluation of personnel performance and recommendation of personnel actions related to recruitment, promotion, retention and/or dismissal.
  • Ensure that the clinical year resources and educational model meet the AVMA COE standards of accreditation.
  • Provide leadership to develop policies and procedures as related to the clinical year of instruction.
  • Provide advocacy and, in collaboration with the Associate Dean for Academic Programs and Faculty Affairs, the Associate
  • Dean for Student Affairs, and the Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion, develop academic plans for students who may be experiencing academic and/or personal difficulties during the clinical year of education.
  • Contribute to the annual budget process to establish budgetary frameworks and manage daily operations of assigned programs to meet budgetary expectations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • DVM (or international equivalent)
  • At least 5 years of leadership and
    administrative experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least 5 years experience in veterinary practice
  • Experience with academic program leadership
  • Demonstrated experience in development and maintenance of customer or stakeholder partnerships/relationships
  • Demonstrated experience with AVMA COE accreditation processes
