Manhattanville College School of Education is seeking an Assistant Dean for Graduate Advising. The Assistant Dean serves as a member of the School of Education’s Administrators Council and the college Academic Advising team. The Assistant Dean works alongside faculty and staff, the field placement office, school district administrators, the Registrar, and other College offices to support the College’s efforts to advise prospective and current graduate students in education. Most importantly, the Assistant Dean is to ensure that graduate students in education have the necessary credentials to graduate and become eligible for statewide certification. The Assistant Dean reports directly to the Associate Dean for Graduate Programs.

Graduate Advisement is to guide students through their degree program from beginning to end.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides academic advising, assists with registration, and monitors the academic progress of graduate education students
  • Serves as a contact and resource for students, faculty, and staff for issues relating to the College’s academic requirements and the state’s certification requirements
  • Works closely with faculty to maintain continuity and quality of student advisement and implements a system to coordinate scheduling, registration and advisement
  • Establishes appropriate staff office hours and coverage during advisement and registration to accommodate student needs
  • Knowledgeable about all aspects of advising processes, degree and program requirements, and teacher certification
  • Reviews student files during registration for completion of co-requisites, comprehensive exams, workshops, certifications, etc.
  • Reviews student records after add drop and again after the conclusion of each semester to advise students accurately based on what they have completed successfully
  • Monitors and communicates all changes to the program requirements in a timely fashion to students, faculty, staff, Registrar and other departments. These changes include those from NYSED as well as communicating updates to the college catalog to students
  • Submits substitutions and waivers in a timely manner, so they will be appropriately reflected in the student’s degree audit, tracking progress towards degree completion
  • Maintains student database and Access database expertise
  • Takes a leading role in preparing graduation lists; approves and helps monitor other staff in clearing graduating students for NYS certification, and trains new office staff in computer skills in all procedures in daily operations
  • Attends and participates in College sponsored special events to which staff is invited to develop and maintain relationships with other college personnel and students, as well as to increase the visibility of the School of Education at these events
  • Attends all School of Education Open Houses and Jump Start events
  • Maintains a working relationship with Today’s Students Tomorrow’s Teachers (TSTT) which includes attending meetings and overseeing advisement for TSTT students
  • Participates in institution-wide Advising Group meetings and trainings
  • Serves on appropriate committees
  • Conducts end of semester grade reviews for provisional acceptance
  • Maintains academic progress reviews and reports with Associate Dean of Graduate Programs.
  • Assists in administering and analyzing the annual Alumni Survey
  • Evaluates student transcripts for certification requirements during the admissions process
  • Participates in Administrators Council meetings
  • Oversees Fast Start program for Manhattanville undergraduates entering graduate program
  • Additional duties as assigned

  • Ability to serve as academic counselor and career counselor for graduate education

  • Demonstrated interest in graduate student development and dedication to the College’s core values
  • Excellent written, oral communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with modern Student Information Systems, Blackboard, MS Office Suite and Early Alert systems

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree
  • Background in K-12 and or higher education as an academic advisor, guidance counselor, teacher, or career counselor

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in advising graduate students highly desirable
  • A minimum of two years of experience in working with graduate students in academic advising in a College environment
  • Knowledge of NYS certification requirements for teacher education and education leadership
