Position Summary:

The Counseling Services Coordinator serves as the primary mental-health counselor/clinician for students at Northland College. In addition to managing a student caseload, the Coordinator will work closely with Student Affairs staff and assist in implementing supplemental mental-health and wellness initiatives and programming. This position is a ten-month (83.3%), campus-based role at Northland College’s campus in Ashland, WI.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Mental-Health Counseling (80%)

a. Provide counseling and mental-health referrals for students seeking assistance

i. Provide assessment and short-term treatment plans for individual students

ii. Refer students to agencies local to Northland College, or the students’ hometowns, for longer-term or specialized care

iii. Provide follow-up with referral agencies and track student progress

    1. Maintain knowledge of current legal and ethical issues related to mental-health practices in higher education
    2. Demonstrate Counseling Services practices that support and encourage students of all intersecting identities to seek treatment and assistance

2. Crisis Intervention and Collaboration (15%)

    1. Assist in the facilitating a multi-disciplinary intervention approach that focuses on triaging clinical emergencies, coordinating intervention, and assuring appropriate individual and organizational follow-up

b. Serve as a core member of the Care Team in order to support students’ academic and personal success both inside and outside the classroom

c. Collaborate with key campus partners, including but not limited to Athletics, Health Services, Residential Life, Academic Affairs, and Campus Security, to support student success and well-being

    1. Collaborate as a Student Affairs team member and perform assessment of complicated clinical situations, including those with the potential risk of harm to self or others.

e. Build cooperative and effective relationships with community mental health care providers

f. Deliver information sessions and basic training for campus partners and student staff/leaders regarding supporting peers with mental-health struggles

g. Represent Counseling Services on the Residential Accommodations Committee and provide recommendations as appropriate

3. Other Duties (5%)

a. Serve on College committees and collaborate with faculty, staff, and other partners, in order to support the success of students and the College.

b. Represent Northland College and Student Affairs as appropriate at functions and events, including but not limited to Admissions events, campus traditions, new student orientation, etc.

Required education and experience:

Education and Experience

  • M.A., M.S., M.S.W., Ed,D, or clinical field
