To support President vandenBerg’s bold new vision for PC, the college is seeking an innovative and accomplished fundraiser, dynamic campaign manager, and volunteer engagement expert to serve as vice president for advancement (VPA). The VPA will join PC at a pivotal moment in its history, joining President vandenBerg early in his tenure to play a central role in enhancing the stature, visibility, and fundraising capabilities of the college. The VPA will report to and partner closely with President vandenBerg, leveraging his experience with and commitment to advancement-related activities.

The successful candidate will:
  • Conduct a robust assessment of the college’s existing philanthropic and volunteer engagement strengths, challenges, and opportunities;
  • Partner with President vandenBerg and the cabinet to create a strategic plan for long-term growth in philanthropic production and volunteer engagement that features dynamic and entrepreneurial strategies, deep collaboration with campus and external constituencies, success metrics, and accountability measures.
  • Evaluate, hire, empower, and mentor Advancement Office staff members
  • Collaborate with campus and external constituencies in managing and directing advancement activities on behalf of the college, including annual giving, advancement services, prospect research and management, targeted major gift initiatives, comprehensive campaigns, corporate and foundation relations, parent and alumni engagement, and donor relations and stewardship.
  • Provide Advancement support for the Board of Trustees and related committees;
  • Plan and oversee all aspects of a forthcoming comprehensive campaign, including proactively shaping and propelling prospect activity and serving as the primary recruiter, trainer, and point of contact for volunteer leaders;
  • Purposefully and strategically expand and deepen engagement by alumni, parents, and friends in such activities as mentoring students, providing students with job and internship support, generating resources for college priorities, and recruiting prospective students to attend PC;
  • Establish an effective partnership with the president to shape a strong philanthropic message for the college, support his work with leadership volunteers and donors, and manage his time efficiently.
  • Remain knowledgeable of the issues facing higher education and small private residential colleges and provide meaningful input as a member of the president’s Cabinet;

  • Accomplished leaders with demonstrated capacity to build upon the existing advancement base, strengthening and transforming it into a highly productive operation;
  • Experienced in volunteer engagement and volunteer-empowered campaigns;
  • Extraordinarily, highly collaborative;
  • Drivers of coalition building across campus to design and implement enrollment, athletics, and other collaborative programs that achieve broad institutional goals; and
  • Demonstrated leaders with experience in development, constituency engagement, and staff management and a comprehensive knowledge of strategies employed in all major development and alumni functions, including expertise utilizing modern technology to advance a program.
The ideal candidates possess:
  • A proven track record of successful management of volunteers who successfully engage in donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship;
  • Expertise to create a metrics-driven and results-oriented work environment that promotes collaboration, achievement, and calculated risk-taking;
  • Significant experience leading all aspects of a complex team, including managing, mentoring, motivating, retaining, and evaluating staff;
  • Experience in closing transformative gifts for a nonprofit organization;
  • Superior written skills; and
  • A master’s degree and CFRE certification.
