Position Summary:

Residence Life is part of the Student Affairs and Resources (StAR) group, which includes most extracurricular student-facing functions of the College (residential life, health and wellness, student equity and inclusion, international student support, study away, student activities, academic support, disability services, post-graduate planning). The StAR team works together to coordinate student support and opportunities. As part of this coordination, this position serves on the Student C.A.R.E. Team and coordinates case management for those resident students needing additional follow-up and support.

The Interim Associate Director for Housing & Residence Life plays a lead role in supporting holistic student development, fostering a strong and positive sense of community amongst students, and advancing Olin’s mission in this small (~360 students), residential, close-knit community. This includes development, implementation, and evaluation of educational initiatives and programming for residential students. The Associate Director oversees recruitment, selection, training, and overall development of student and professional staff. This position uses an educational lens to handle housing policy violations as well as working to resolve other student issues that may arise. The Associate Director participates in “on-call duty rotation” and crisis response. This is a live-on position.

The Interim Associate Director for Housing & Residence Life directly supervises 2 Graduate Hall Directors and multiple undergraduate Resident Resources (R2s). The Associate Director coordinates ongoing training and development of Residential staff in support of both student development and institutional mission/goals. The Associate Director develops a residential curriculum for programming initiatives to support student development, including but not limited to intentional floor level programs, building programs, large scale departmental programs, and other initiatives. The Associate Director will coordinate across StAR to ensure that the residential curriculum focuses on diversity and inclusion, wellness, career development, and community engagement.

This position is a full-time, benefited position open immediately and available through May 31, 2022, with the possibility of extension by mutual agreement. A two-bedroom furnished apartment and a full academic year meal plan are provided. 


Community Development

  • Provides leadership for staff and students in developing a community which:
    • supports students' personal, academic, and social development,
    • respects the rights of others and promote multicultural understanding and consideration of individual needs in a group living environment,
    • promotes responsible citizenship and development of leadership and personal life skills.
  • Maintains visibility in the community by regularly interacting with residents, attending programs, visiting staff and residents in their rooms, and eating meals in the campus dining facility, etc.
  • Advises student groups and assists in the development of the concepts of self-governance and community participation. Meets regularly with student leaders.


  • Supervises two graduate assistants hall directors and eight Resident Resources (R2s). Meets weekly with student staff as a group and at least bi-weekly with individual staff members. Provides on-going feedback to student staff.
  • Provides the resources, guidance, and support necessary for staff to be successful in their positions. Provides for on-going staff development opportunities for staff.
  • Establish a sense of unity and teamwork among the staff members. Provides team-building opportunities to promote good staff relations.


  • Along with residents and other staff, develops and implements regular educational, social, and recreational programs and activities tied back to institutional goals. Promotes student-faculty contacts. Coordinates the programming within the campus community.
  • Supports staff in programming efforts through training, attendance, resources, and guidance.
  • Coordinates with other StAR staff on community engagements and programing.

Advising and Referral of Students

  • Member of the CARE team; meeting weekly to coordinate support of students of concern.
  • Is available, approachable and responsive to students. Advises and refers individual students and groups regarding personal and academic needs and College/Housing procedures.
  • Mediates conflicts between students or staff as necessary.

Student Conduct

  • Promotes student rights and responsibilities through educational trainings and individual meetings.
  • Oversees student staff responsibilities in communication of community expectations of students and response to behavioral issues.

General Program Administration

  • Coordinates, in conjunction with colleagues, student staff selection, and training.
  • Communicates departmental needs and instructions to staff and students. Solicits staff and student input in decision making, as appropriate. Facilitates effective communication between all staff and students.
  • Keeps supervisor informed regarding hall activities, staff efforts, and student concerns. Updates staff on administrative issues that are relevant to residents - safety, assignments, maintenance, housekeeping, etc.
  • In cooperation with supervisor, develops and presents student staff training sessions and other developmental meetings for the student leaders.
  • Shares responsibility with other live-in staff for responding to medical, safety, and security emergency needs and to students experiencing personal crises after hours. Works with and refers to appropriate campus services. Along with other live-in staff, provides on-call coverage when any residential facility is occupied.
  • Attends weekly staff meetings with other StAR professional staff. Meets weekly with supervisor.
  • Safeguards the confidentiality of discussions with students and of departmental administration by exercising discretion in communication and handling of all confidential information and materials.

Housing Operations Responsibilities

  • Assists in overall administration of the housing program. Assists in development and evaluation of departmental policies, procedures, and goals.
  • Oversees the housing selection process, room assignments and the day to day management of occupancy records
  • Educates staff and residents on safety and security concerns and appropriate emergency response procedures.
  • Effectively manages financial accounts. Disperses departmental monies responsibly and prudently.
  • Reports unsafe conditions, damage and other facilities issues to appropriate college staff.
  • Represents Residence Life on College committees as needed. Provides leadership for committees and/or special projects as determined.
  • Provides accurate accounting of budgetary assignments.
  • Assumes other duties as assigned by the Dean of the College/supervisor.
  • Leads, coordinates, and implements residence hall move in and move out processes, including scheduling of staff, volunteers, and campus partners.
  • Coordinates and leads opening and closing operational tasks during semester and holiday breaks. This includes, but is not limited to, move-in routes and signage, moving cart distribution and storage, and distribution of recycling bins.
  • Manages residence hall damage billing process, including oversite and training of hall staff in assessing damages, billing of damages to student accounts, and the appeals process.
  • Develops and sustains liaison relationships with Information Technology, Purchasing, Public Safety, and Facilities Maintenance and Housekeeping.
  • Manages and coordinates residence hall security and key access.

Job Requirements


  • Masters Degree in higher education administration, social work, counseling, or related field; and at least three years post masters full-time experience in residential life/student affairs.
  • Knowledge of and experience with crisis protocol and response,
  • High level of accuracy and pertinent computer skills, including database management and working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Knowledge of Residential Curriculum Models and Student Development Theories.


  • Four (4) or more years of experience within residence life and housing programs in a role within higher education.
  • Demonstration of progressively more responsible roles within residence life and housing.
  • Evidence of success in creating a positive and strong residential community, including creation of a residential curriculum.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in supervising, motivating and leading others with compassion.
  • Working knowledge of various social networking mechanisms for marketing and communication.
