Job Profile Summary:

The Staff Software Engineer is a position of technical expertise, influence, and leadership. The person will need to apply their expert knowledge and skill to ensure best practices and well-engineered architecture across the enterprise. They will also be a key stakeholder and initiator of major changes to processes, engineering practices, and system administration. This position will be required to work and deliver against a variety of critical issues and initiatives across multiple teams. It will require an extensive and deep understanding of architectural practices and innovative approaches to problems. Principal Software Engineers are also tasked with establishing and maintaining a positive and productive culture based on the WGU Leadership Principles.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Lead in the building of front-end applications and services to improve the user experience.

  • Exemplify a mastery of coding excellence and software quality, mentoring others and pioneering new standards and architectural foundations.

  • Foster and utilize innovative approaches to problems and functionality for all key stakeholders.

  • Collaborate with multiple partners to develop features and innovative approaches to applications and features.

  • May mentor/advise engineering teams on implemented solutions and act as a resident expert when needed.

  • Lead in the prototyping and development of new technology and framework, improving the end user experience.

  • Identify system redundancies and inefficiencies, proposing innovative and cost-effective solutions.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to work equally well in self-managed and team-based Agile projects.

  • Work with internal customers to gather business processes and project requirements.

  • Proactively engage with opportunities to support fellow team members.

Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to establish innovative system frameworks.

  • Demonstrated ability to implement and manage an API Framework.

  • Demonstrated understanding of SOA design principals.

  • Familiarity with SOLID design principles.

Job Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • The individual is acknowledged within the group as a subject matter expert.

  • Typically requires a University Degree or equivalent experience.

Department Specific Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or related field.

  • 7 years' experience in software development; pioneering new approaches and technologies in engineering.

  • Experience in web-based applications and web services such as .net, Java, React, Angular, NodeJS, Python, GIT and other technologies, including experience with integrating third-party products. Demonstrated ability to establish innovative system frameworks.

  • Demonstrated ability to implement and manage an API Framework.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in the following areas: Amazon Web Services (AWS), GIT, and Angular

  • REST API experience with Open API/Swagger, API versioning, and API gateways/forwarders.

  • Experience architecting, implementing, and managing enterprise-level solutions.

  • Strong experience with distance education and distance learning students is preferred.
