Position Summary

The Software Engineer develops and leads the next-generation technologies that change how thousands of students complete continued education online. We're looking for engineers who bring fresh ideas from all areas, including information retrieval, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking and data storage, security, artificial intelligence, natural language processing; the list goes on and is growing every day. As a Software Engineer, you will work on a specific project critical to WGU's needs with opportunities to switch teams and projects as you and our fast-paced business grow and evolve. We need our Engineers to be versatile, display leadership qualities, and be enthusiastic to take on new problems across the full-stack as we continue to push technology forward.

Team Specifics

As a Software Engineer II for the Financial Services team, you will develop web applications utilizing Java and Angular code in an Amazon Web Services cloud environment. We are at an exciting stage of development utilizing new technologies to deliver applications that will provide students with a one of kind testing experience

Job Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Subject matter expert in the area of responsibility or working knowledge of several technical areas.

  • Typically requires a technical university degree or equivalent experience.

  • 4 years of prior relevant experience.

Department Specific Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, or related field.

  • 3+ years' experience and a proven track record in developing web-based applications and web services using Java, REST, XML, and other web technologies.

  • 2 years' experience with software Java (Spring), JavaScript (Node.js, React, Angular)

  • Experience interfacing with Oracle databases and integrating third party products with existing infrastructure.

  • Experience with SQL including Pl/SQL.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Jira, Agile/Scrum project development Hibernate, Banner, Application Integration with legacy systems, Java EE

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Develop web applications and web services using JavaScript, Java, AWS, REST, XML, HTTP, and Angular as well as other web technologies.

  • Develop integrations between 3rd party systems using SQL and a variety of job scheduling technologies.

  • Manage multiple tasks and responsibilities in high-pressure environments; excelling at pinpointing and resolving problems in early project stages to avoid cost/time expenses.

  • Deliver high quality projects on time, through ability to design architecture, write high quality code, and execute effective unit tests.

  • Participate and contribute towards improving development processes and best practices.

  • Optimize performance tuning for high utilization 24x7 access.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work equally well in self-managed and team-based Agile projects.

  • Work with internal customers to gather business processes and project requirements.

  • Analyses software requirements to determine feasibility of design within time and cost constraints.

  • Develops and directs software system testing procedures, programming, and documentation.

  • Performs miscellaneous projects as assigned.

  • Updates technical skills as required.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
