The Art Department at Augustana University is seeking applicants for the faculty position of Assistant Professor of Ceramics beginning Fall 2022. This position may be converted to a tenure track position in the third year based on institutional planning as well as individual performance and qualifications.

Primary Responsibilities: (1) Instruction of ceramics studio courses for majors and non-majors, (2) management of ceramics studio and kilns (3) service to the University community.

Description: The Art Department at Augustana University is seeking applicants for the faculty position of Assistant Professor of Ceramics. The ideal candidate will demonstrate an understanding of contemporary art issues, methods, and technologies and be committed to teaching excellence, maintaining on-going artistic studio practice and creative research, and provide service to the institution. The university seeks individuals with drive, an appreciation for diversity, and talent to teach undergraduate courses in ceramics. Successful candidates will maintain the ceramics studio classroom space, including the salt and electric kilns. The development of new course offerings in ceramics is expected and strong candidates will have the ability to teach material traditions as well as contemporary three-dimensional exploration.

Responsibilities: Teach a 3-1-3 course load at the undergraduate level. Manage and maintain the ceramics studio as well as all firing and kiln operations. Actively engage in service to the Art Department and the institution. The ideal candidate will have a vibrant practice, engaged with contemporary ceramics and other media, and be conversant with contemporary art theory and practice. We seek an innovative artist-educator who can engage students at all levels of an interdisciplinary undergraduate studio art curriculum.

Successful candidates will have the following qualifications:

Minimum Education: MFA required

Required Qualifications: 

  • Demonstrated and significant experience working with ceramics. Additional experience with a variety of sculptural materials, mold making and casting, and knowledge of woodworking techniques is preferred.

  • Evidence of a dynamic professional practice and engagement in the field through exhibitions, publications, or similar endeavors.

  • Teaching experience outside of graduate school and a commitment to college-level teaching.

  • The successful candidate will be expected to maintain active professional development activities and service to the Department and University. Committee work is expected. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expertise in curriculum building and teaching in the area of ceramics and sculpture with a strong knowledge base in historic and contemporary practice.

  • Postsecondary teaching experience in person and online.

  • Applicants whose studio practice and teaching are engaged in the inclusion of diverse perspectives are encouraged to apply.

  • University teaching experience outside of graduate school.

Salary: Salary is competitive and dependent upon qualifications.
