This position reports to the Manager of Collection Development and provides a wide variety of the most advanced professional library services which may include metadata creation, acquisitions, licensing, preservation, digital library, and data services. Serves as a resource to others and regularly solves complex problems based on advanced knowledge and expertise. Initiates process improvements, policy changes, and new initiatives to contribute towards continual improvement in services and operations.

The Digital Collections and Metadata Librarian is responsible for the development, expansion, and preservation of the digital collections and services at the Libraries. This includes creating, maintaining, and enriching metadata for digital objects and collections, managing the institutional repository system, and assisting with the management of the Library’s LMS. The position is also responsible for: performing original and copy cataloging for all formats and ensuring compliance with national and local standards.

This position includes the following responsibilities:

  • Creates, processes, and maintains the most complex metadata records for the purposes of resource discovery, access, and inventory control, by following local and national cataloging and metadata standards and exercising a significant degree of independent judgement.
  • Provides expertise in the analysis, planning, development, and deployment of resources to search, manipulate, and preserve information.
  • Oversees day-to-day functions of one or more library operations or services.
  • Performs complex acquisition processes, including bibliographic searching, vendor assignments, determination of holdings, and choice of entry and database record format.
  • Identifies and evaluates preservation and curation needs and determines preservation strategies.
  • Provisions access to and discovery of electronic resources, coordinates online access, and troubleshoots issues to provide library patrons with consistent access.
  • Consults with campus entities on preservation, curation, and data services solutions.
  • Serves as a resource to other librarians and staff both within and outside of their work unit on a regular basis.
  • Initiates and solicits input to modify policies, procedures, and assessment tools to improve workflows and/or user experiences.
  • Serves on committees to advance librarianship at the campus, local, and/or state and national levels.
  • May direct the day-to-day activities of student workers.
  • Coordinates and manages the development and implementation of metadata strategies that support the discovery and curation of the Library’s digital content, and serves as the administrator for the Library’s institutional repository, including updating associated web pages and library guides.


  • Bachelor’s Degree at time of application 
  • Experience working in a higher education setting


  • Master's Degree from an ALA accredited program
  • Experience working in an academic library
  • Experience working with Ex Libris Alma
  • Experience working with OCLC CONTENTdm, or other institutional repository systems
  • Experience developing how-to guides, instruction, presentation, or resource materials
  • Knowledge of information management concepts such as: controlled vocabularies, authority control, and metadata
  • Knowledge of current research, technologies and scholarly trends in digital scholarship, open access, and scholarly communications
  • Ability to efficiently manage multiple projects at a given time
  • Ability to effectively collaborate and build partnerships with faculty and staff
  • Ability to learn new technologies and metadata standards
  • Bilingual in Spanish, Hmong, Somali or Oneida

Position is a full-time Academic Staff appointment.  This position may have the option to work on-campus, virtually, or a hybrid schedule. Official transcripts of the highest degree achieved will be required of finalist(s). Salary range of $50,000 - $54,000.

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).


UW System provides an excellent benefits package to meet the diverse needs of its employees.  This includes several health insurance options, with annual deductibles as low as $250/individual and $500/family. Our benefits package also includes dental, vision, several life insurance options, AD&D and Accident insurance and Flexible Spending and Health Savings Accounts.  We participate in the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS), where employer contributions begin immediately and employees are fully vested after 5 years of service.  The UW System also provides supplemental retirement savings programs including a 403(b) and Deferred Compensation.

In addition, employees receive several types of paid leave benefits, which are prorated for employees working less than 100%.  This includes 9 legal holidays, 36 hours of personal holiday and between 96-130 hours of sick leave annually.  Employees earn 13-27 days of vacation each year, depending on years of service and employment type.
