The University of Lynchburg, a private regional university, located in the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Central Virginia is seeking a full-time program and advising coordinator for transfer and commuter student initiatives to join the Office of First and Second Year Initiatives team.

The program and advising coordinator for transfer and commuter student initiatives reports to, is supervised by, and evaluated by the director of first and second year initiatives. The evaluation of work performance will be ongoing and will be carried out by the director of first and second year initiatives. It will include the specific duties and responsibilities of this position description plus employee attitude and general working behavior.

Job purpose:

  • To provide direct service support to the Office of First and Second Year Initiatives in the Academic Achievement Center through individual work with advising students and in small group activities/workshops. To assist with the planning of activities, programs, and services that contribute to the success of transfer and commuter students. These include (but are not limited to): assisting with recruiting efforts, orientation, advising, teaching and academic coaching programs and services. In addition, the program and advising coordinator will serve as the academic advisor for first-year transfer students. Additional responsibilities may include assisting with the administration of other programs as offered by the Academic Achievement Center.

Job duties:

  • In conjunction with the director of first and second year initiatives, develop, improve and implement effective orientation programs and welcome week (Hornet Day) events for all transfer, and transition students; coordinating these activities.
  • Assist the director of first and second year initiatives with managing, coordinating, and improving programs and services for all transfer and commuter students. Specifically Commuter Appreciation Week and National Transfer Student Week.
  • Assist in managing transition programs for transfer students including the recruitment, selection, and training of Link Leaders (orientation leaders, peer mentors, and peer educators)
  • Provide individual academic advising to first-year transfer students.
  • Advise students on the development and selection of course schedules consistent with students’ goals.
  • Provide direct service support to individual transfer and commuter students on matters related to transition, academic progress, major selection, and student development.
  • Assist in the assessment of transfer and commuter student services and programs.
  • Develop and teach courses designed to meet the needs of entering transfer students and other first-year students.
  • Work with others on campus (Registrar, advisors in schools, enrollment and student development staff, etc.) to coordinate initiatives designed to support second-year, transfer, access, and second degree student success.
  • Provide coaching services to transfer, as well as other students, as needed.
  • Serve as the advisor for the Commuter Student Association and Tau Sigma: Transfer Honor Society
  • Serve as co-chair of the Transfer and Access (Adult) Student Success Committee
  • Supervise 1 graduate assistant for the Academic Achievement Center
  • As part of the Academic Achievement Center, participate in initiatives that support student success.
  • Performs other duties as required.

  • 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. (7.5 hours/day with some evening and weekends)

Experience/skills:

  • A minimum of one year experience working in an educational setting (preferably higher education) with students in transition and handling multiple priorities. Graduate assistantship counts as work experience.
  • Strong interpersonal and writing skills, as well as the ability to supervise student leaders are essential.
  • Experience in planning and executing special events and orientation is desirable.
  • Experience working with transfer students through advising, orientation, or transition.
  • Experience working with and programming for commuter students.Developed analytical skills and ability to use technology software to collect and analyze data and trends.
  • High personal motivation, organization, and follow-up skills necessary as is the ability to multitask, meet deadlines, work effectively as a team member with a collegial and collaborative style.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a high volume environment.

Physical demands:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 30 lbs.
  • Some tasks may involve walking, stooping, kneeling, bending, lifting or carrying.

Required qualifications:

  • A minimum of one year experience working in an educational setting (preferably higher education) with students in transition and handling multiple priorities. Graduate Assistantship counts as work experience.
  • Excellent communication skills in person, small or large groups; effective public speaking skills and the ability to interact with a wide-range of diverse constituents. Excellent written language skills.
  • Experience working in either orientation, transition, retention, academic advising, or student affairs.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience working in orientation, transition, or retention.
  • Experience in academic advising.
  • Experience working with transfer students.
  • Experience working with commuter students.
  • Experience with advising a student organization.
  • Experience working on committees and working in a team environment.
  • Experience supervising, hiring, and training student leaders.
  • Teaching experience.

Education:

  • A Master’s degree in an appropriate field is required (higher education, student personnel, counseling, or other related programs).
