Summary

Reporting to the President and CEO of Merit Network, Inc., this position is a strategic leader with high-level administrative operations orchestration responsibilities who will oversee, mentor and develop the finance, human resource, and facilities teams - being responsible for both the effective administrative operations and long-term planning. This position is an officer of the company and will be a member of the CEO's executive leadership team. The CFO also works closely with key board members and board committees.

Responsibilities*

Internal and External Relationships
  • Reporting to the President and CEO and serve as advisor to the executive leadership team and Board of Directors on budget, forecast, investments, audit and other matters (E)
  • Provide leadership, direction and management to Merit departments: Finance, Human Resources, and Facilities, including CEO and Board support staff, to ensure well-functioning planning and operations (E)
  • Participate in strategic planning activities with the executive team, the Merit Board and Finance Committee providing input and leadership on decision-making affecting the organization and share responsibility for overall financial policy development and management (E)
  • Serve as liaison to the University of Michigan concerning the organizational hosting agreement, billing issues, and other matters (E)
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with department leaders
  • Partner and serve as corporate liaison with outside legal counsel in addressing business issues and risk mitigation (E)
  • Participate in written and  analytical components of federal and state grant submissions with both internal and external participants (E)
  • Select and engage auditors, tax preparers, and other consultants as required (E)
  • Maintain effective relationship with landlord in order to promote the sound operational functionality of the facility (E)
  • Represent Merit to banks, financial partners, institutions, public auditors, insurance providers, and federal and state officials when required (E)
Finance and Accounting
  • Working with and through the Controller, oversee all aspects of financial processes, providing both tactical and strategic support for all departments (E)
  • Coordinate and oversee processes for budgeting and forecasting both for analytical and functional purposes (E)
  • Review and analyze quarterly financial results and provide recommendations (E)
  • Oversee official federal, state, and municipal financial reporting, tax preparation, audits, and contracts (E)
  • Produce detailed and timely financial reports, metrics and KPI driven operational analysis (E)
  • Monitor and advise executive team on capital spending and special projects (E)
  • Track and manage cash flow and provide short and long-term planning to ensure funds availability (E)
  • Review all year-end closing activities including general ledger and balance sheet accounts (E)
  • Review and ensure application of effective internal controls for financial data and corporate assets (E)
  • Enhance and implement financial, accounting and control systems, processes, and applications by optimizing business tools and planning for future software improvements (E)
  • Adhere to applicable financial and regulatory requirements (E)
Administration
  • Assess, advise, modify, if required, and administer vendor contracts and supervise corporate document tracking and costs through internal database systems (E)
  • Review and manage appropriate insurance coverage, oversee subrogation processes and risk management policies and procedures (E)
  • Manage and direct special projects on behalf of the CEO and Board (E)
  • Coordinate and oversee the administrative elements of active grants (E)
  • Work with the Human Resources Team to ensure appropriate legal compliance and contribute to staffing requirements planning across the organization (E)
  • Develop Human Resources policies and procedures internal to Merit (E)
  • Work with the Facilities Team to maintain short and long-term building integrity and functionality (E)
Mentoring
  • Provide supervision, training, leadership and development for Merit's Finance and Administration sub-departmental managers and staff. (E)
  • Develop divisional goals, priorities and budgets, and ensure departments in sphere of control understand and meet these. (E)
  • Integrate succession planning by identifying crucial job skills, knowledge, and organizational practices and incorporate those into training and career development of subordinates. (E)
  • Promote organization-wide financial literacy and fiscal management mindset for managers across all functional areas (E)
  • Promote excellence in the day-to-day service of all Finance and Administrative teams (E) 
  • Provide management of and mentoring to all Finance and Administrative staff, ensuring professional development opportunities as warranted (E)
  • Demonstrate ethical leadership, business integrity and promote corporate accountability (E)
  • Maintain and communicate through words and actions commitment to the mission and values of Merit (E)

Required Qualifications*
  • Bachelor's degree in a business field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Active CPA status
  • 7+ years of leadership experience in relevant professional field
  • Strong team leadership qualities and organizational management skills
  • Embody high ethical standards
  • Experience in using and leading the use of enterprise business systems
  • Demonstrated experience in developing staff and building teams
  • Experience in leading the development of enterprise budgets, operational and capital
  • Strong decision-making and problem solving ability
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate effectively throughout all levels within and outside of an organization, including presentation and public speaking
  • Experience with constructive change management
Desired Qualifications*
  • Graduate degree in a business area of study
  • Leadership experience in a networking or telecommunications organization, including broad knowledge of relevant federal and state regulations
  • Proficiency with the Netsuite ERP system
  • Experience with vendor management and associated contracts
  • Experience leading human resource departments
  • Experience leading facilities operations
  • Experience operating within an outside physical plant regulatory environment
  • Experience in federal and state grant proposal development and submissions
  • Leadership experience in a non-profit organization

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional environment. This role routinely used standard office equipment such as computers, information technology systems, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Physical Demands

Employee must frequently work at computer stations, answer telephone calls, emails, and/or other forms of customer/client communications. Employee may on occasion be required to move items of various sizes and weights throughout the office or building.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position, work schedule will be determined by the supervisor and may change if necessary. There may be some occasional work required outside of established schedule, which may include weekends and holidays. Typical work schedule is 8am-5pm, Monday through Friday for most staff.

Travel

Travel may be required.
