Job Description

Reporting to the Building Automations System Supervisor, the Building Automations System Technician monitors, operates, maintains, modifies, troubleshoots and replaces pneumatic, electric, electronic and direct digital controls systems for campus HVAC building controls, lighting controls and building control system network. This ensures occupant comfort, space pressurization, improves system efficiency, and reduces facility operating costs. The reliable operation of these systems is critical to research labs and server rooms.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree in Electronics, Building Automation or directly related field, or equivalent training and/or experience.
  • Experience with installation, programming, startup, commissioning, integration, modifying, troubleshooting and repair of one or more direct digital control systems such as Siemens
Insight, Siemens Desigo CC, or Trane ES.
  • Experience configuring and integrating various manufacturer graphical user interfaces, network
level controllers and field level controllers using BACnet, LonWorks, Modbus and proprietary protocols.
  • Experience verifying readings and measurements on building automation systems.
  • Experience comprehending and analyzing complex interrelationships between multiple mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Experience working from drawings, schematics, blueprints and job layouts.
  • Experience working with a variety of hand tools.
  • Strong computer skills with software such as Excel and Word.
  • Must have a valid drivers license.
  • Must have strong interpersonal and verbal/written communications skills.
  • Must have the ability to interact with contractors and commissioning agents to verify systems are installed and operate properly.
  • Must have the ability to safely and frequently move and handle heavy objects weighing 50 pounds or more; ability to maneuver materials up and down stairs;
  • Ability to climb and work from elevated work stations such as ladders and scaffolds.
  • Ability to work for long periods of time standing, walking, reaching, bending, pushing/pulling.
  • Must be able to work in all types of weather conditions, including extreme temperatures.
  • This position is designated as "Emergency Personnel."
  • May be required to work additional hours/shifts to meet the needs of the department.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Virginia Master's HVAC license.
  • Considerable experience in repair and maintenance in a large institution or commercial facility with complex infrastructure systems, with hands on experience troubleshooting and calibrating pneumatic and DDC building management controls systems.
  • Experience with Siemens BAS systems.

  • Ability to safely move and handle heavy objects weighing 50 pounds or more; maneuver materials up and down stairs; climb and work from elevated work stations such as ladders and scaffolds; work in awkward positions and confined spaces; work for long periods of time standing, walking, reaching, bending, pushing/pulling; and work in all types of weather conditions, including extreme temperatures.
  • Repetitive motion through use of tools, equipment and computer keyboarding.
  • Must have an acceptable and safe driving record.
  • Must have a driver's license check.
  • Emergency Personnel health &; safety related.
  • Typical work hours are 7 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. M-F.
  • May be required to work additional hours/shifts to meet the needs of the department.
  • Must have annual health and safety medical check.

The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check as well as documentation ofCOVID-19 vaccinationor receive approval from the university for a vaccination exemption due to a medical condition or sincerely held religious belief.
